(1528-1699)
John Harley of the Historical Manuscripts Commission was invited by Reginald Rawdon Hastings to examine his family's extensive archives at the Manor House, Ashby de la Zouche, in Leicestershire. Harley produced a detailed calendar, of which this is the second volume, published in 1930, Hastings himself having since died, and Harley having been killed at Gallipoli, the work being completed by his colleague, Francis Bickley. This volume covers four categories of the records: correspondence of the Hastings family 1528 to 1699; newsletters sent by professional reporters in London 1669 to 1693; papers relating to the Band of Gentlemen Pensioners, of which Theophilus 7th earl of Huntingdon was captaon, 1677 to 1685; and correspondence of the Rawdon family, 1641 to 1694, including papers of George Monck, afterwards Duke of Albemarle, when commanding in Ulster. Also includes Queen Anne's Civil List (royal expenditure) Lottery papers: payment of the royal servants had fallen two years in arrear: Parliament passed an Act allowing the queen to raise half a million pounds by pledging 32 years' future income: she did this by means of a lottery.

The Daily Universal Register of February 1785 includes a section entitled Ship News. This is compiled from reports from Portsmouth, Deal, Milford, Poole, Standgate Creek and Gravesend as to merchant shipping movements; news of losses and sightings coming in from various ports; a list of Ships Arrived in the (London) River, in the Clyde, in the Downs, off Beachy Head, off Dover, off Poole, at Alicante, Amsterdam, Ancona, Baltimore, Barbadoes, Belfast, Bilbao, Bordeaux, Boston (New England), Bristol, Bryar, Cadiz, Campvere, Charlestown, Cork, Cowes, Creek, Cuxhaven, Dartmouth, Dominica, Dover, Dublin, Dunkirk, Falmouth, Faro, Gibraltar, Glendore, Grenada, Halifax (Nova Scotia), Havre de Grace, Helvoetsluys, Hull, Kinsale, Lancaster, Leghorn, Leith, Lisbon, Liverpool, Londonderry, Lough Ryan, Margate, Milford, Mogador, Naples, New York, Newcastle (on Tyne), Newry, Ostend, Penzance, Philadelphia, Plymouth, Poole, Portsmouth, Rotterdam, St Domingo, St Kitts, St Lucar, St Lucia, St Marks, Scilly, Sealock, Smyrna, Standgate Creek, Tenerife, Texel, Waterford, Zeirickser, and in 'Africa', the Isles de Lo's, Jamaica, North Carolina and Virginia; and Reports of Ships made at the Custom House in London. Except in the home ports, the register refers only to British shipping: each ship is usually identified merely by its name, and the master's surname, although masters' christian names are given occasionally. | Anglican clergy

Crockford's Clerical Directory listed all Anglican clergy in the British Isles, India, the colonies, Europe, Asia and South America. The 59th annual issue, for 1930, is based on returns from all the individuals listed. The details given are: name (surname first, in capitals) in bold, prefixed by an asterisk in the case of university electors, and by a dagger whether the return had not been made, or it had been imperfectly filled up; name of theological college and/or university, and degrees, with years; a bold d followed by year and diocese signifies date of ordination as deacon and by which bishop; then a bold p, similarly for ordination as priest; posts (C: curate; I: incumbent; V; vicar; R: rector) with parishes and years; address; telephone number; and lists of books &c. where appropriate. In the case of the man then holding an English, Irish, Scottish or Welsh benefice, additional details are given - a bold P signifies the patron of the advowson; then the income, with items such as Q. A. B. (Queen Anne's Bounty), Eccles(iastical) Comm(issioners), Fees, e. o. (Easter Offerings), Pew Rents, T(ithe) R(ent) C(harge), Gl(ebe), &c.REN. Cost: £4.00. | Sample scan, click to enlarge
