Cheshire gentry and their ancestors (1580-1613) Richard St George, Norroy King of Arms, and Henry St George, Bluemaster Pursuivant of Arms, of the College of Arms, conducted a heraldic visitation of Cheshire in 1612 and 1613, recording pedigrees of gentlemen claiming the right to bear coats of arms. A copy of their visitation was elaborated by the addition of other Cheshire pedigrees in Harleian Manuscript 1535: and this manuscript was edited by sir George J. Armytage and John Paul Rylands for publication by the Harleian Society in 1909. It has a large number of pedigrees of Cheshire gentry, with a few brief abstracts from early documents; and the pedigrees of some offshoots from old Cheshire stocks which had taken root in other counties. The pedigrees largely relate to the period back from 1613 to the previous visitation of 1580, but there is also some older material, particularly back into the 15th century. In most cases each pedigree is prefixed by a heraldic description of the coat of arms. The printed volume also includes (pages 1 to 4) a list of Cheshire men who disclaimed the right to bear a coat of arms at the 1613 visitation, taken from Harleian Manuscript 1070. OLDFEILD. Middlesex Sessions (1603-1625) Incidents from the Middlesex Sessions Books. These are abstracts of sessional orders, minutes of criminal cases, memoranda and other entries of record taken from the three volumes of Gaol Delivery Register, four volumes of Sessions of Peace Register and two volumes of Process Books of Indictments for the county of Middlesex from the reign of king James I. The references at the end of each item indicate the volume in question, the abbreviations being G. D. for Gaol Delivery, S. P. for Sessions of Peace, and S. O. T. for Session of Oyer and Terminer; occasionally preceded by S. for Special or G. for general, or followed by R. for Roll or Reg. for Register. It should be noted that, in the case of 'true bills' or indictments, the abstract starts with the date on which the offence took place, the date of the conviction &c. being at the end of the entry. Wills proved at York: Names of Testators (1627-1637) The diocese of York comprised most of Yorkshire, and Nottinghamshire: the York Exchequer court was the ordinary probate jurisdiction for the Yorkshire part of the diocese, but some wills from Nottinghamshire and other parts of the province of York were also proved there. Dr Francis Collins compiled this index to the transcribed wills of the Prerogative and Exchequer Courts in the York registry proved from 1627 to 1637. The date on the left is that of probate; the testator's full name is then given (surname first), parish or place of abode, and sometimes occupation, and date that the will was executed; and volume and folio number where it the transcript commences. Purchasers of Bishops' Lands: Wiltshire (1647-1651) 16 November 1646 Parliament ordained the sale of all the lands and estates of the bishops and archbishops for the service of the Commonwealth. This account, printed in 1834, is a transcript from a manuscript presented to the British Museum by William Bray (Add. 9049). It gives in tabular form the details of the conveyances of the lands to private individuals, showing the name of the bishopric; the date of the conveyance; county; description of the lands; purchaser; and purchase money. A total of over Ł624,158 was raised: after the restoration of the monarchy these estates were returned to the Church, with compensation. OLDFEILD. Cost: £6.00.	Sample scan, click to enlarge
Hope Easter Roll: Coplow Dale and Beriston (1658) J. Charles Cox in 1889 published this transcript 'from some folio papers pinned together, pertaining to the Dean and Chapter of Lichfield, which are indorsed “Hope Easter Booke, pro annis, 1658, 1659, 1660 : Arthur Jeynson, George Armestrong.” The entries for the two last years are short and fragmentary, but a literal copy is given of the whole of the year 1658. The list is evidently a complete record of those who paid their accustomed ecclesiastical dues at Easter, according to custom, and hence may be looked upon as a full census of all the householders of this extensive parish'. Names of heads of household are given, with abbreviations such as ap. for beehive, vac. for cow, vit. for calf, describing the animals on which tithe was due; but also fil., mat. and pat. to show where the payment included dues on behalf of child, mother, or father. The amounts stated in the columns on the right are not, as usual, pounds, shillings and pence, but rather shillings, pence and halfpence. There are separate returns for the townships and hamlets of Abney and Grange; Aston; Bradwall; Brough and Shatton; Coplow Dale and Beriston; Great Hucklow; Greenlow; Haslebadge; High Lowe, Stooke and Padley; Hope; Little Hucklow; Neither Ashop; Offerton; Pindale End; Shalcrosse; Thornhill; Wardlow; Windemill House; and Woodland. Prerogative Court of Canterbury Wills: Ballesore: Strays (1658) William Brigg compiled abstracts of all the wills in Register "Wootton" of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. The abstracts of those proved in 1658 were published by him in 1894. The court's main jurisdiction was central and southern England and Wales, as well as over sailors &c dying abroad. We have re-indexed the whole volume, county by county, for both testators and strays (legatees, witnesses and other persons mentioned in the abstracts). OLDFEILD. Cost: £4.00.
