An Act of Parliament of 9 George I required all men aged 18 and over who had not done so previously to swear allegiance. From 17 August to 24 December 1723 the greater part of the men of Hertfordshire attended at various inns in the county to sign the oath of allegiance: women were exempt from the act, but almost as many attended and swore. This list indicates the place of attestation by letters A., B., C., &c., for which there is a key, scans of which are included with the main scan for the surname. OFFLEY. In South-Britain, or England' gives the names (and often the annual salaries) of the government functionaries, civil servants, churchmen and military, systematically arranged section by section. Section 40 lists the establishment of the civil branch of his Majesty's Office or Ordnance, from the Major General down to assistant clerks; with officers at Portsmouth, Woolwich, Chatham, Plymouth, Sheerness and Upnor, and storekeepers at Berwick, Hull, Greenwich, Pendennis, Chester, Jerset, Guernsey, Carlisle, Edinburgh, Stirling and Fort William; and civil officers at Gibraltar, Port Mahon, and storekeepers at Placentia and Annapolis-Royal.OFFLEY. | Mathematics students at Cambridge University

Tripos lists or examination results for the year, arranged by class (Wranglers, Senior Optimes and Junior Optimes), and within each class in order of score in the examination. Each student's surname and college is given: this list was printed in 1890, and was annotated with asterisks to show which students had subsequently become fellows of the university; and with footnotes showing those who became headmasters, &c., elsewhere. Recipients of the Chancellor's Medals are annotated with (A) for the senior medal, (B) for the junior. These lists are particularly useful in identifying for an individual the fellow-students who will have attended lectures with him; and, where from the college, are likely to have been even more closely associated by having been under the same supervisor.
