'The general price of Lodgings from the first of September to the 31st of May is 10s. 6d. a week for the best rooms, and 5s. 6d. for servant's rooms; the other three months, viz. Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's name, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. The indentures themselves can date from a year or two earlier than this return. (The sample entry shown on this scan is taken from a Bristol return. Minutes of the evidence presented at the Central Criminal Court were recorded in shorthand by Henry Buckler. This volume covers the whole proceedings of the Queen's Commission of the Peace, Oyer and Terminer, and Gaol Delivery, for the City of London, and Gaol Delivery for the county of Middlesex and those parts of the counties of Essex, Kent and Surrey lying within the jurisdiction of the Central Criminal Court, for the 7th to 12th sessions, from May to October 1839. The index covers both the accused and the witnesses (including police constables &c.) summoned to give evidence. The accused's name is given an asterisk if previously in custody; and a dagger if a 'known associate of bad characters'. Perry's Bankrupt and Insolvent Gazette, issued monthly, included lists of Irish bankrupts to surrender at the Court of Bankruptcy on Lower Ormond Quay. The initial entry gives the name of the bankrupt (surname first, in capitals), address and trade, often with the phrase dlr. and ch., for 'dealer and chapman'; the dates of the stages of the official surrender, the name and address of the agent and the date of the fiat.
