Customs Officers at Cowes (1853) The lists of customs officers at the outports of Great Britain and Ireland give the full names of the staff arranged by rank - usually the collector, controller, clerks, landing surveyors, searchers, superintendent of lockers, chief tide surveyor and inspector of water guard, tide surveyors, inspectors of patrol, and inspecting commander of coast guard. Sailors and marines awarded the Baltic Medal (1854-1857) During the Crimean War, a British and French fleet entered the Baltic, and captured Bomarsund harbour and one of the Aland Islands (now part of Finland). Bomarsund is the sound between the islands and the Swedish island of Vardo; and at the fine harbour on Bomarsund, dominating the entrance of the Gulf of Bothnia, and indirectly that of the Gulf of Finland, the Russians had constructed a northern naval base, and this was destroyed in the attack. The British fleet taking part in the Baltic expedition comprised Her Majesty's ships Aeolus, Ajax, Alban, Algiers, Amphion, Archer, Arrogant, Basilisk, Belleisle, Blenheim, Boscawen, Bulldog, Caesar, Calcutta, Centaur, Colossus, Conflict, Cornwallis, Cossack, Cressy, Cruizer, Cuckoo, Cumberland, Dauntless, Desperate, Dragon, Driver, Duke of Wellington, Edinburgh, Esk, Euryalus, Exmouth, Falcon, Firefly, Geyser, Gladiator, Gorgon, Hannibal, Harrier, Hastings, Hawke, Hecla, Hogue, Imperieuse, James Watt, Leopard, Lightning, Locust, Magicienne, Majestic, Merlin, Miranda, Monarch, Neptune, Nile, Odin, Orion, Otter, Pembroke, Penelope, Pigmy, Porcupine, Prince Regent, Princess Royal, Pylades, Resistance, Retribution, Rhadamanthus, Rosamond, Royal George, Royal William, Russell, St George, St Jean D'Acre, St Vincent, Sphinx, Stromboli, Tartar, Termagant, Tribune, Tyne, Valorous, Volage, Volcano, Vulture, Wrangler and Zephyr. This is the medal roll of the naval and marine claimants who qualified for the Baltic Medal for service in 1854 to 1855. The medals were dispatched in batches from early 1857, the first batch being numbered B A 1, the next B A 2, &c.; then follows the destination (a place or, more usually, a ship) and the date of dispatch. Unclaimed Naval Prize Money from the China War (1856-1860) Various prize moneys were awarded to officers and men who served on board her Majesty's ships on the China Station during the war of 1856 to 1880. Firstly, there was a parliamentary grant of one month's pay to those serving on the Acorn, Actaeon, Adventure, Algerine, Amethyst, Assistance, Banterer, Barracouta, Belleisle, Bustard, Calcutta, Camilla, Clown, Comus, Cormorant, Cruiser, Drake, Elk, Encounter, Esk, Firm, Forester, Furious, Fury, Haughty, Hesper, Highflyer, Hornet, Inflexible, Janus, Kestrel, Lee, Leven, Melville, Minden, Nankin, Niger, Nimrod, Opossum, Pique, Plover, Princess Charlotte, Racehorse, Raleigh, Sampson, Sans Pareil, Slaney, Spartan, Starling, Staunch, Surprise, Sybille, Tribune, Volcano, Watchful, Winchester, and Woodcock*; in addition Canton booty was awarded to those serving on the ships asterisked (plus the Bittern and Coromandel tenders) at Canton on 28 and 29 December 1857, when that city was bombarded and captured. Then those on board the Bustard, Cruiser, Esk, Forester, Haughty, Highflyer, Lee, Niger, Nimrod, Sampson, Surprise, and the boats of the Elk, were rewarded for the captures of junks for breach of blockade of Canton River between 29 August and 19 December 1857. Other captures made by her Majesty's ships led to various other awards distributed between 1 January 1855 and 19 February 1863. Nevertheless, for one reason or another a substantial number of these prizes, from as little as 1s 7d to as much as Ł28, remained undistributed by 1902, when this comprehensive list of the unclaimed moneys was printed. In each case the sailor's name is given first (surname, then christian name or initials); rank or rating; ship in which serving at time of capture or award; parliamentary award; Canton booty; captures for breach of blockade of Canton River; other captures; and then the total. Isle of Wight Electors: Ryde: for Moffatt (1870) 'Poll Book at the Election of a Knight of the Shire for the County of the Isle of Wight taken on the 10th day of June, 1870. Candidates: - George Moffatt, Esq. and Baillie Cochrane, Esq.' The electors are listed by polling district (Newport, Ryde, Ventnor, West Cowes and Yarmouth), in three categories - those who voted for Moffatt, those for Cochrane, and those unpolled - giving full name and place of abode. Justices of the Peace, Ryde (1885) "Return giving the Names and Professions of all Justices of the Peace in the Boroughs and Cities of England and Wales, on the 1st day of June 1885, with the Dates of their Appointment; showing which were Non-resident, or had ceased for a Year or upwards to attend the Bench." Outstanding soldiers of the Gloucestershire Regiment (1881-1901) Each year the best soldiers of the regiment were chosen for long service and good conduct medals. This register gives rank, name, regimental number, and date of recommendation. (The sample scan is from the East Surrey regiment). The register is essentially a register of recommendations, annotated with details of the issue of the medals. Where no gratuity accompanied the medal, the entry is marked 'W. G.' (without gratuity); where, for one reason or another, the medal was not issued, the entry is marked 'N. S.' (not sanctioned) and struck through. The regiment was based on the 28th Regimental District - Bristol. The 1st battalion returned from the Straits Settlement to Ireland in 1879, was moved to England in 1882, and in 1885 was stationed at York; it was transferred back to Ireland in 1888, and next embarked for Malta 1 November 1893, and from there to India in 1897. Having been moved to South Africa in 1899, it took part in the South African war 1899 to 1900, before being transferred in 1900 to Ceylon. The 2nd battalion embarked for Malta in February 1878, and from their sailed for India in 1880; by 1885 it was stationed at Poona; it returned to England (via Aden) 28 November 1894, and in 1895 was stationed at Devonport. The 2nd battalion was also sent to South Africa in 1900, and added "South Africa, 1899-1902", "Defence of Ladysmith", "Relief of Kimberley" and "Paardeberg" to the regimental honours. KATON. The regiment was based on the 64th Regimental District - Lichfield. The 1st battalion was transferred from the Channel Islands to Ireland in 1879; and from Ireland to England in 1883. In 1884 it embarked for the West Indies; in 1886 was sent from there to South Africa; in 1891 from South Africa to Mauritius; and in 1892 from Mauritius to Malta. In 1895 the battalion was moved to Egypt, taking part in the Dongola Expeditionary Force of 1896; and in 1897 to India. The 2nd battalion was serving in India in 1881, based at Quetta by 1885, and returned to England via Aden 30 March 1888. The India Office (1905) The India List and India Office List was compiled from official records by direction of the Secretary of State for India in Council, and published by the India Office annually. It covers civil servants and military except for officers drawing substantive pay of less than 500 rupees a month. Names shown in italics are those of officers in foreign service, supernumerary, seconded or employed outside their own departments. This is the list for the Office of the Secretary of State for India in Council, including the Council, Correspondence Departments, Accountant-General's Department, Funds Department, Store Department, Registry and Record Department, Miscellaneous Appointments, India Audit Office, and Office Keepers and Messengers. Missing Persons (1923) The Police Gazette was published by Authority by the London Metropolitan Police, and circulated, as confidential, to the police forces throughout Britain and Ireland. The contents were based on the information routinely submitted to the Criminal Record Office. One of the regular features was a section entitled 'Missing'. These give details of people reported missing by their families fearing that 'some ill may have befallen them'.
