Clergy, the religious and the faithful in Britain and Ireland (1471-1484) These are abstracts of the entries relating to Great Britain and Ireland from the Lateran and Vatican Regesta of pope Sixtus IV. Many of these entries relate to clerical appointments and disputes, but there are also indults to devout laymen and women for portable altars, remission of sins, &c. This source is particularly valuable for Ireland, for which many of the key government records of this period are lost. Many of the names in the text were clearly a puzzle to the scribes in Rome, and spelling of British and Irish placenames and surnames is chaotic. Sixtus IV was consecrated and crowned 25 August 1471 (the day from which his pontificate is dated) and died at Rome 12 August 1484. The extracts were made by J. A. Twemlow from Vatican Regesta dxlvi to dclxxxi and Lateran Regesta dccxiii to dcccxxxviii, and published in 1955. Not all the Lateran registers survive from this pontificate, but were still in existence in the 18th century, when indexes were compiled giving rubricelle, or brief summaries of the papal bulls; nor, indeed, have all these indexes now survived, but Twemlow added an appendix listing all the rubricelle relating to the British Isles extant for the reign of Sixtus IV. Customs Officers (1715-1716) Abstract of the Treasury declared accounts for the Customs: General Account, Christmas 1715 to Christmas 1716, AO 1/644/246; Cash Account, Christmas 1715 to Midsummer 1716, AO 1/786/985; Tobacco, General Account, Christmas 1715 to Christmas 1716, AO 1/645/249, and Cash Account, Midsummer to Christmas 1716, AO 1/787/993; Wines and Vinegar, General Account, Christmas 1715 to Christmas 1716, AO 1/645/248, and Cash Account, Christmas 1715 to Midsummer 1716, AO 1/786/987; Silks and Linens, General Account, Christmas 1715 to Christmas 1716, AO 1/645/247, and Cash Account, Christmas 1715 to Midsummer 1716, AO 1/786/986. Residents of Ceylon (1880) The General Directory of Ceylon lists residents alphabetically by surname, with initials, occupation and address. Soldiers' Balances Unclaimed: List CCLXX (1894) The War Office, under 'The Regimental Debts Act, 1893' compiled and published lists of names of deceased soldiers whose personal estate was held by the Secretary of State for War for distribution amongst the Next of Kin or others entitled. These lists give full name (surname first), rank, regiment, and the amount of the estate unclaimed. During 1894 new lists CCLXI to CCLXX relating to recent deaths were issued, as well as republications of lists from previous years showing details of estates still remaining unclaimed. JAN. Deaths in India (1904) The India List and India Office List was compiled from official records by direction of the Secretary of State for India in Council, and published by the India Office annually. An appendix to the volume for 1905 lists retirements and deaths from the ranks of the civil service and the army in India for the previous year: the details given are name (surname and initials, and any honours); Service or Appointment; and date of death. Barristers (1918) The Law List for 1918 includes this 'List of Counsel, Special Pleaders, and Conveyancers at the Bar'. Each name is given in full, surname first; then the name of the Inn of Court as an abbreviation (G., Gray's Inn; I., Inner Temple; L., Lincoln's Inn; M., Middle Temple; and D. C. for Doctors' Commons) and date at which called to the bar. Barristers in practice are usually furnished with an address, and there are some abbreviated references to judicial awards and appointments. Members of Cambridge University (1935) The Cambridge University Calendar for 1935-1936 includes this list of all living members of the university, i. e. not only undergraduates and members of staff, but also all surviving graduates from earlier generations. The names are arranged alphabetically by surname, then by college in order of foundation, and under the particular colleges by order of seniority of the B. A. degree. Surnames are given, initials, name of college, and then the years of graduating B. A. and M. A. Where a change of name had occurred since matriculation, the original name is inserted in brackets. For undergraduates the term of matriculation is given in square brackets with an M for Michaelmas, L for Lent or E for Easter. An asterisk before a surname indicates a member of the Senate. Names which appeared on the roll of the Regent House promulgated in November 1934 are marked with a dagger. Student Electrical Engineers (Student I. E. E.) (1939) The Institution of Electrical Engineers was founded in 1871 under the name of The Society of Telegraph Engineers, and incorporated by royal charter in 1921. The list of members, corrected to 1 September 1939, gives the names and addresses of the various grades of members. Members (M. I. E. E.) and Associate Members (A. M. I. E. E.) were entitled to describe themselves as Chartered Electrical Engineers. Then there are the Associates (Associate I. E. E.), Companions (Companion I. E. E.), Graduates (Graduate I. E. E.) and Students (Student I. E. E.). The names are given in bold, surname first; before each name is the year of attaining that grade; and for the higher grades the year of each lower grade is also given, e. g. (G. 1931). JAN.
