A poll of the freemen and non-freemen electors of the City of Oxford took place on 25 July 1837, the candidates being William Hughes Hughes (H), Donald Maclean (M) and William Erle (E). This poll book lists all 2145 voters, as well as those electors who did not vote. In both cases, the lists are divided into a single register of freemen, and then the non-freemen arranged by parish or ward - All Saints, Cowley, Holywell, St Aldate, St Clement, St Ebbe, St Giles, St John, St Martin, St Mary Magdalen, St Mary the Virgin, St Michael, St Peter in the East, St Peter le Bailey, and St Thomas. The votes of those who voted are shown on the right hand side of the page. A parliamentary poll of the freemen and electors of the City of Oxford was taken 30 June 1841, the candidates being Donald Maclean (Mac), James Haughton Langston (Lan) and Neill Malcolm (Mal). The poll book records the names, addresses and occupations of the householders, district by district, as well as the names of the freemen of the city, and shows for whom they voted.GRAINGE. | Electors for Stonebeck Down
(1848)
On 14 and 15 December 1848 an election took place for a Knight of the Shire for the West Riding of Yorkshire in the House of Commons. The candidates were Edmund Denison and sir Culling Eardley Eardley, gaining 14,743 and 11,795 votes respectively. The county franchise at this period included freeholders of land worth 40s or more a year; £10 copyholders and long-leaseholders; and £50 short-leaseholders and tenants. This poll book was published in 1849.
Former poll books had been compiled from the sheriff's returns; but as these were now transmitted to the Home Office immediately after an election, in this instance the polling was marked from the check-clerk's returns, carefully compared with the registers marked in the poll booths at the time of voting.
The votes for the respective candidates are indicated by the numerals 1 (Denison) and 2 (Eardley). The omission of these numerals indicates that the elector did not vote. Many names which appear on the register of particular townships are completely omitted in this poll book: in all these cases, the same name will be found recorded in some other township, the elector having two or more qualifications. In such cases, his name only appears in the poll book in the actual township for which he chose to vote; or, if he did not vote at all, in that township for which he was qualified that lay closest to his actual residence.
The townships are arranged alphabetically within polling district; and within each township the names are arranged alphabetically by surname and christian name, and the elector's residence is given. Many of the electors resided outside the township for which they were qualified - some in other counties. Moreover, at the end of each polling district there is a list of persons registered to poll in that district, from townships is other districts. GRAINGE. Cost: £6.00. | Sample scan, click to enlarge

| Registered Church of England schoolmasters aged under 35

The Committee of Council on Education for England and Wales produced an annual report which included several lists of teachers and trainee teachers, including an Annual Calendar of Teachers who have Obtained Certificates of Merit (completed to 1 January 1856), from which this sample scan is taken. Then followed class lists for students as at Christmas 1855 in the training schools, arranged by second and first year, and within each year into first, second and third division. Full names are given, surname first. D. indicates that the student had been awarded a Certificate of Competency in Drawing. Similar lists are next given for teachers in elementary schools, assessed into divisions, and arranged by denomination, and within denomination by age (over or under 35), or whether previously certified and passing papers for the second or third year. Then there are lists of 'teachers provisionally registered for completion of their present engagements with Pupil-Teachers', arranged by age and denomination, as well as teachers of 35 years or more registered for capitation grants, again arranged by denomination.GRAINGE. The unclaimed dividend books of the Bank of England, containing names and descriptions of over 20,000 persons entitled to many millions of pounds accumulated in the bank unclaimed during the 18th and 19th centuries, mostly in consols and annuities, and transferred to the Commissioners for the Reduction of the National Debt.
