His Majesty's ship the Leander took part in the destruction of the French fleet in Aboukir Bay at the mouth of the Nile ('the Battle of the Nile') on the evening of the 1st and morning of the 2nd August 1798. This is the muster book for 1 June to 18 August 1798: being a continuation book in a series covering wages and victualling from June 1796, it also includes the names of some men who had died, deserted or been discharged from the ship from then to June 1798. Of the ship's complement of 343, this index covers the sailors, volunteers, and boys, as well as the supernumeraries: but not the marines, or the French prisoners taken after the battle. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. The indentures themselves can date from a year or two earlier than this return. (The sample entry shown on this scan is taken from a Bristol return. | Freeholder voters in Middlesex
(1802)
A poll to elect two knights of the shire to represent the county of Middlesex, was held at Brentford 13 to 29 July 1802. The electors were the adult male freeholders of more than 40s per annum of real estate. This poll book lists the voters alphabetically by surname, giving christian name, abode, where the freehold was situate, the nature of the freehold (such as messuage, house, land, rent-charge &c.), the occupier's name, and whether the freeholder voted for William Mainwaring, George Byng or sir Francis Burdett. The entries are printed across facing pages, of which this sample shows part of a lefthand page. For each name indexed, the matching pair of scans is provided. This is the index to the freeholders.

The poll of the freeholders of Berkshire on an election of two representatives in Parliament, taken at Abingdon on Monday 12 October 1812 and fourteen following days. The candidates were Charles Dundas esquire (D: 1717 votes), the Hon. Richard Neville (N: 1374), and William Hallett esquire (H: 525). This poll book sets out the names of the voters in alphabetical order parish by parish. After the name of the parish or township, the name of the hundred in which it lay is given in italics. The freeholders' full names are stated, surname first, and the place of their abode (often elsewhere). The right hand column records their votes.
