F. Jollie and Sons of Carlisle printed this Cumberland Guide and Directory 'containing a Descriptive Tour through the County, and a List of Persons in Public and Private Situations in every Principal Place in the County'. The sample scan is from the Carlisle directory. In amongst the directory lists there is an excursus about the Workington Agricultural Society, which was promoting advances in farming, breeding, horticulture and implement-making in Cumberland, and also had an active branch on the Isle of Man, which became called the Manx Society. | Electors in Tonbridge

A poll to elect knights of the shire to represent the Western Division of the county of Kent in parliament was held in 1835, the candidates being Thomas Law Hodges (H), Thomas Rider (R) and sir William R. P. Geary (G). The poll started on January 19th; Rider withdrawing his name on that first day, the poll was closed prematurely, many electors not yet having voted. This poll book lists all the electors, whether they voted or not; the county franchise included not only male freeholders of 40s a year, but also £10 copyholders and long-leaseholders, and £50 short-leaseholders and tenants. For each elector the full name is given (surname first) and residence (often not the place for which qualified to vote). Votes are indicated by dashes in the right-hand columns. EDGER. | London, Shoreham and Brighton Railway Shareholders

The return of the railway subscription contracts deposited in the Private Bill Office lists the 307 shareholders in the London, Shoreham and Brighton Railway, Without a Tunnel (Mills's Line), who between them had subscribed £521,800 towards the £996,053 estimated expenses of the project. The register of electors entitled to vote in any parliamentary election for East Norfolk between 1 November 1840 and 1 November 1841 lists 8,556 freeholders arranged by hundred and within hundred by parish or township &c. In the first column, after number within the register, the elector's name is given (surname first); the second column gives place of abode; the third column the nature of qualification (such as 'owner and occupier'); and the fourth column the address of the qualifying property, in some cases with the name of the tenant or occupier.EDGER. | Foreign Residents in China

The Chinese Repository for 1845 contains this alphabetical list of foreign residents in China, giving name (surname and christian name or initials) sometimes with the addition '& fam[ily]', and italic abbreviations showing nationality (such as br for British, por for Portuguese, &c.), and where resident - a for Amoy, c for Canton, f for Fuchau, h for Hongkong, m for Macao, n for Ningpo, or s for Shanghai. ab means absent, and 'in several instances the place of residence cannot be determined'.EDGER. | Electors for Grassington
(1848)
On 14 and 15 December 1848 an election took place for a Knight of the Shire for the West Riding of Yorkshire in the House of Commons. The candidates were Edmund Denison and sir Culling Eardley Eardley, gaining 14,743 and 11,795 votes respectively. The county franchise at this period included freeholders of land worth 40s or more a year; £10 copyholders and long-leaseholders; and £50 short-leaseholders and tenants. This poll book was published in 1849.
Former poll books had been compiled from the sheriff's returns; but as these were now transmitted to the Home Office immediately after an election, in this instance the polling was marked from the check-clerk's returns, carefully compared with the registers marked in the poll booths at the time of voting.
The votes for the respective candidates are indicated by the numerals 1 (Denison) and 2 (Eardley). The omission of these numerals indicates that the elector did not vote. Many names which appear on the register of particular townships are completely omitted in this poll book: in all these cases, the same name will be found recorded in some other township, the elector having two or more qualifications. In such cases, his name only appears in the poll book in the actual township for which he chose to vote; or, if he did not vote at all, in that township for which he was qualified that lay closest to his actual residence.
The townships are arranged alphabetically within polling district; and within each township the names are arranged alphabetically by surname and christian name, and the elector's residence is given. Many of the electors resided outside the township for which they were qualified - some in other counties. Moreover, at the end of each polling district there is a list of persons registered to poll in that district, from townships is other districts. EDGER. Cost: £6.00. | Sample scan, click to enlarge
