State Papers Domestic (1702-1703) The State Papers Domestic cover all manner of business relating to Britain, Ireland and the colonies, conducted in the office of the Secretary of State, as well as other miscellaneous records. 1 March 1702 to 31 May 1703. The calendar was prepared by Robert Pentland Mahaffy, with certain classes of document extracted and placed in separate appendices (called Tables): I, caveats; II, church and university appointments, &c.; III, commissions, warrants for commissions, notes of commissions and notes of warrants for commissions in the English army for 1702; IV, lord lieutenants and deputy lieutenants; V, Irish warrants; VI, weekly lists of ships of the Home Fleet with their stations and orders; VII, passes, notes of passes, post warrants and licences of absence; VIII, orders on petitions; IX, Scottish warrants and commissions; and X, miscellaneous royal warrants (to the Attorney or Solicitor General; in criminal cases; diplomatic; military warrants; miscellaneous warrants; secretary's warrants, allowance of bills, &c.; and notes of warrants for the appointment of almsmen). The source material in the Public Record Office that he drew on in making this compilation is referenced throughout, and is from the State Papers Domestic (and Military, Naval, Signet Office, Various, and Letter Books and Entry Books), State Papers Scotland (Correspondence, Letter Books and Warrants), State Papers Ireland (and King's Letter Books), and State Papers Channel Islands. Treasury Books (1704-1705) Records of the Treasury administration in Britain, America and the colonies, for January 1704 to March 1705. The text covers a huge variety of topics involving all manner of receipts and expenditure, customs and revenue officials, civil servants, pensioners, petitioners and postmasters figuring particularly among the individuals named. Apprentices registered at Hereford (1710-1712) Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's father's name and address, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. May 1710 to January 1712. Persons Insured by the Sun Fire Office, London (1714) This list of the persons insured by the Sun Fire Office, London, gives full name (surname first), occupation (in italics), and the letter g (for goods) or h (for house) indicating the nature of their policy. Those with more than one g or h, have so many policies. An appendix lists those entered since, and omitted in printing the list, which was published in instalments from February to March 1714. City of London: Pewterers (1724) A list of the members of the several London livery companies that polled for Edward Bellamy esquire to be sheriff for the city of London and county of Middlesex for the remaining part of the year, published 16 March 1724. Wandsworth Burials (1730) The ancient parish of Wandsworth in Surrey comprised the single township of Wandsworth, including the hamlets of Garratt, Half Farthing and Summers Town. It lay in the archdeaconry of Surrey of the diocese of Winchester: unfortunately, few bishop's transcripts of Surrey parish registers survive earlier than 1800. Although the original parish registers of Wandsworth doubtless commenced in 1538, the volume(s) before 1603 had been lost by the 19th century. In 1889 a careful transcript by John Traviss Squire of the first three surviving registers was printed, and we have now indexed it year by year. The early burial registers contain little detail - date of burial, and full name. For the burial of children, the father's name is also stated; for the burial of wives, the husband's. Such details as date or cause of death, age, address or occupation are almost never given. The burial registers are considerably more bulky than the baptism registers, because the burying ground was used by Dissenters, who formed a large part of the population. These include a French Protestant congregation that worshipped in a church (the registers of which do not survive) in a courtyard immediately opposite the parish church. The Quakers had a cemetery of their own. The 18th-century burial registers also include a surprising number of children sent out to Wandsworth from London to nurse. TRAHERN. Cost: £4.00. Custom House Officials (1741) 'A General List, or Catalogue, Of all the Offices and Officers Employ'd In the several Branches of his Majesty's Government Ecclesiastical, Civil, Military, &c. In South-Britain, or England' gives the names (and often the annual salaries) of the government functionaries, civil servants, churchmen and military, systematically arranged section by section. Section 25(a) lists the commissioners, officers and others belonging to the Custom House, including the customs officers of the Port of London, at the out-ports of Sandwich, Chichester, Southampton, Poole, Plymouth, Exeter, Gloucester, Bristol, Bridgwater, Cardiff and Swansea, Milford, Ipswich, Yarmouth, Lynn, Boston, Hull, Newcastle, Berwick, Carlisle and Chester; and officers appointed by the commissioners at Rochester, Faversham, Sandwich, Deal, Dover, Rye, Shoreham, Arundel, Newhaven, Chichester, Portsmouth, Southampton, Poole, Cowes, Weymouth, Lyme, Exeter, Dartmouth, Plymouth, Looe, Fowey, Falmouth, Penryn, Truro, Penzance, St Ives, Padstow, Biddeford, Barnstaple, Ilfracombe, Minehead, Bridgwater, Bristol, Gloucester, Chepstow, Cardiff, Swansea, Milford, Llanelly, Cardigan, Aberdovey, Maldon, Colchester, Harwich, Woodbridge, Aldeburgh, Southwold, Ipswich, Yarmouth, Blakeney and Cley, Wells, Lynn, Wisbech, Boston, Hull, Bridlington, Scarborough, Whitby, Stockton, Sunderland, Newcastle, Berwick, Carlisle, Whitehaven, Lancaster, Preston and Poulton, Liverpool, Chester and Beaumaris; and in the Plantations at Carolina and the Bahamas, South Carolina, North Carolina, Roanoake, Brunswick, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, East Jersey, New York, Connecticut, New England, Bahamas, and Barbados.
