Apprentices registered at Southampton and Whitchurch in Hampshire (1717-1719) Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's father's name and address, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. Because of the delay before some collectors made their returns, this register includes indentures and articles from as early as 1716. Inhabitants of Epsom in Surrey (1790-1797) The provincial sections of the Universal British Directory include lists of gentry and traders from each town and the surrounding countryside, with names of local surgeons, lawyers, postmasters, carriers, &c. (the sample scan here is from the section for Hull). The directory started publication in 1791, but was not completed for some years, and the provincial lists, sent in by local agents, can date back as early as 1790 and as late as 1797. STURGISS. Sailors and marines on H. M. S. Himalaya in the Crimean War (1854-1856) Sebastopol in the Crimea was the great Russian naval arsenal on the Black Sea. A combined assault by British, French and Turkish troops resulted in the reduction of Sebastopol and led to the Treaty of Paris of 27 April 1856, guaranteeing the independence of the Ottoman Empire. By Admiralty Order the Crimea Medal was awarded to sailors and marines present during the campaign, between 17 September 1854 (the first landing at Eupatoria) and 9 September 1855 (when the allies secured Sebastopol). The sailors' medals were mostly delivered to them on board ship in the course of 1856; the marines' medals were sent to their respective headquarters for distribution. The remarks as to distribution in this medal roll therefore give more specific information as to the whereabouts of the sailor recipients in 1856 than about the marines. Her Majesty's Ship Himalaya took part in the assault. Four clasps to this medal were awarded to the men present in the actions at Sebastopol itself, Inkerman, Balaklave (Balaclava) and (the sea of) Azoff, but the recipients of these clasps are recorded on separate rolls, not part of this index, but indexed on this site. Outstanding soldiers of the Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own (Yorkshire Regiment) (1881-1901) Each year the best soldiers of the regiment were chosen for long service and good conduct medals. This register gives rank, name, regimental number, and date of recommendation. (The sample scan is from the East Surrey regiment). The register is essentially a register of recommendations, annotated with details of the issue of the medals. Where no gratuity accompanied the medal, the entry is marked 'W. G.' (without gratuity); where, for one reason or another, the medal was not issued, the entry is marked 'N. S.' (not sanctioned) and struck through. The regiment was based on the 19th Regimental District - Richmond in Yorkshire. The 1st battalion embarked for Egypt 3 August 1884, and took part in the action of Giniss; in 1888 the battalion was moved to Cyprus, and in 1889 back to England; to Jersey in 1892; to Ireland in 1895; to Gibraltar in 1898; back to England in 1899. That year the battalion was sent off to the war in South Africa, taking part in the relief of Kimberley, and the fighting at Paardeberg, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill and Belfast, returning to England in September 1902 - having added "South Africa, 1899-1902", "Relief of Kimberley" and "Paardeberg" to the regimental honours. The 2nd battalion returned to England from India 21 January 1877, moved to Ireland in 1881, and in 1885 was stationed at the Curragh; having returned to England in 1886, the battalion embarked for India 1 January 1890, and by 1895 was serving at Shwebo in Burmah, having taken part in the North West Frontier campaign. Pupils at Becket School, West Bridgford (1938) Issues 25,649 to 25,676 of the Nottingham Guardian, the regional daily newspaper, were published Monday to Saturday, in August 1938. Apart from general features, national and international news, the paper - with offices in Nottingham, Derby, Grantham, Lincoln, Loughborough and Mansfield - covered local events throughout the East Midlands.
