Civil Service Appointments (1860)
The Civil Service Commission published an annual list of all persons who had obtained certificates of qualification for appointment in the various public departments. The list gives full name (surname first); department (such as Post Office, or Inland Revenue); situation (such as Letter-carrier, or Clerk); and date of certificate. Candidates whose names are preceded by a dagger obtained appointments as the result of competition; a double dagger indicates open competition. Those whose names are preceded by an asterisk obtained honorary additions to their certificates either for proficiency in extra subjects chosen by themselves, or for marked proficiency in the prescribed subjects. Then follows a further list of these candidates who had obtained Honorary Additions to their Certificates in this way: giving name (surname and initials); position in the service (department and situation); subjects for which honorary additions were made; and 'extent of knowledge displayed' (such as Creditable, Fair, or Very Creditable). 1 January to 31 December 1860.

National ArchivesOutstanding soldiers of the King's Own (Scottish) Borderers (1881-1901)
Each year the best soldiers of the regiment were chosen for long service and good conduct medals. This register gives rank, name, regimental number, and date of recommendation. (The sample scan is from the East Surrey regiment). The register is essentially a register of recommendations, annotated with details of the issue of the medals. Where no gratuity accompanied the medal, the entry is marked 'W. G.' (without gratuity); where, for one reason or another, the medal was not issued, the entry is marked 'N. S.' (not sanctioned) and struck through. The regiment was based on the 25th Regimental District - Berwick-on-Tweed. The 1st battalion embarked for India 13 October 1875, and was stationed at Meerut by 1885. It returned from India 6 February 1891, and in 1895 was at York. The 2nd battalion returned from Aden to England 27 March 1876: in 1879 it was moved to Ireland and by 1885 was stationed at Dublin. After a brief stay on Gibraltar in 1886, the battalion returned to England. 19 July 1888 the battalion embarked for Egypt, and from there was sent into the Soudan, fighting at Gemaizah; it was moved back into Egypt in 1889, and in 1890 set sail for India, where in took part in the Chitral Relief Force and the North West Frontier campaign, adding "Chitral" and "Tirah" to the colours. In 1895 the troops were at Rawul Pindee. The regiment took part in the South African war, gaining the distinctions "South Africa, 1900-1902" and "Paardeberg".

Associates of the Institute of Bankers (1904)
The Journal of the Institute of Bankers for 1904 includes a list of Fellows (from which this scan is taken: an asterisk indicates a Life Fellow), of Associates (an asterisk indicates a Life Associate, and a dagger a holder of the certificate of the institute), and of Ordinary Members; there are also results of the institute's final examinations held from 11 to 13 April, in which the successful candidates are listed alphabetically by surname and full christian name(s), with the name and address of their bank (not their personal addresses). These final examinations entitled the successful candidates to the Certificate of the Institute of Bankers; those who obtained distinctions are so indicated in the lists (an asterisk for Commercial Law, dagger for Arithmetic and Algebra, double dagger for Practical Banking, double s for Commercial Geography and History, and double vertical line for Political Economy). There was also an examination taken after the Gilbart Lectures, with successful candidates being awarded money prizes, or certificates of distinction, or honour, or merit, and similar lists of these awards were also printed in the journal.
