Grantees of royal lands and pardons (1175-1176) The Great Rolls of the Pipe are the central record of the crown compiling returns of income and expenditure from the sheriffs and farmers of the various English counties or shires. This is the oldest series of public records, and the earliest surviving instances of many surnames are found in the Pipe Rolls. This is the roll for the 22nd year of the reign of king Henry II, that is, accounting for the year from Michaelmas 1175 to Michaelmas 1176. Most (but not all) of the entries in which names appear relate to payments for grants of land and fines or pardons. The large number of payments of fines for forest transgressions has been interpreted as a form of compounding for pardons by those who had rebelled during the recent years of unrest; or, looking at it in a different way, a form of extortion from the king in order to raise money to pay off the mercenaries with whose help he had quelled the rebellions. There is a separate return in each year for each shire, the name of the shire being here printed at the top of each page. Wales was still independent, in separate kingdoms, at this period, and is not included, except for 'Herefordshire in Wales'. LENS. Cost: £4.00.	Sample scan, click to enlarge
Pipe Roll (1201-1202) The Great Rolls of the Pipe are the central record of the crown compiling returns of income and expenditure from the sheriffs and farmers of the various English counties or shires. This is the oldest series of public records, and the earliest surviving instances of many surnames are found in the Pipe Rolls. Two sets of pipe rolls were prepared, not exact duplicates, the main series being the Treasurer's or Exchequer rolls, the copies (of which fewer have survived) being the Chancellor's rolls. The Chancellor's roll (or Antigraphum) for the 3rd year of king John became separated from that series at some date, and found its way to the miscellaneous records in the Chapter House at Westminster. As it happens, the Chancellor's roll for that year is in a better state of preservation than the Treasurer's roll, so it was chosen for publication by the Commissioners on the Public Records of the Kingdom, by whom it was printed in extenso in 1833. Harley family papers (1690-1708) This collection of letters and papers is particularly interesting in that it includes a file of petitions and memorials to queen Anne from 1704 to 1708, and a similar file of petitions to Robert Harley in his post as Secretary of State during the same years. Exchequer (1741) 'A General List, or Catalogue, Of all the Offices and Officers Employ'd In the several Branches of his Majesty's Government Ecclesiastical, Civil, Military, &c. In South-Britain, or England' gives the names (and often the annual salaries) of the government functionaries, civil servants, churchmen and military, systematically arranged section by section. Section 24 lists the Lord Commissioners for executing the office of Treasurer of the Exchequer and other officers, officers of his Majesty's Receipt of Exchequer, the Tax-Office in the Exchequer, including tellers, clerks and money porters. Excise Commission (1741) 'A General List, or Catalogue, Of all the Offices and Officers Employ'd In the several Branches of his Majesty's Government Ecclesiastical, Civil, Military, &c. In South-Britain, or England' gives the names (and often the annual salaries) of the government functionaries, civil servants, churchmen and military, systematically arranged section by section. Section 28 lists the commissioners of his Majesty's Revenue of Excise and other officers employed in the said revenues, with separate sections for the excise officers dealing with malt and hops; hides, plate, coffee, tea and chocolate; and distillery. Section 79 lists the King's Officers and Servants in Ordinary Above Stairs, under the Lord Chamberlain, including the Grooms of the Bedchamber, the Gentlemen of the Privy Chamber, Cup Bearers, Carvers, Gentlemen-Sewers, Gentlemen-Ushers of the Privy Chamber, Daily Waiters, Grooms of the Privy Chamber, Quarterly Waiters in Ordinary, Sewers of the Chamber, Pages of the Presence Chamber, Grooms of the Great Chamber, Coffer Bearers, Pages of the Bedchamber and Back Stairs, Officers in the Removing Wardrobe, Standing Wardrobe keepers, the Master of the Robes and his officials, the Waiters of the Robes, Laundress of the Body Linen, Sempstress, Starcher, Necessary Women, Treasurer and Comptroller of the Chamber, Master of the Jewel Office, Master of the Ceremonies, Serjeants-at-Arms, and a host of messengers, musicians, physicians, apothecaries and surgeons; together with the housekeepers for the various palaces, and other royal servants and officials throughout the realm. Masters and Apprentices (1746) Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's father's name and address, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. 3 November to 31 December 1746 LENS. Mathematics students at Cambridge University (1779) Tripos lists or examination results for the year, arranged by class (Wranglers, Senior Optimes and Junior Optimes), and within each class in order of score in the examination. Each student's surname and college is given: this list was printed in 1890, and was annotated with asterisks to show which students had subsequently become fellows of the university; and with footnotes showing those who became headmasters, &c., elsewhere. Recipients of the Chancellor's Medals are annotated with (A) for the senior medal, (B) for the junior; and winners of Dr Smith's Mathematical Prizes are marked (1) senior, (2) for junior. These lists are particularly useful in identifying for an individual the fellow-students who will have attended lectures with him; and, where from the college, are likely to have been even more closely associated by having been under the same supervisor.
