Government accounts, with details of income and expenditure in Britain, America and the colonies, October 1706 to December 1707: an abstract prepared by William A. Shaw, and issued in 1952 by authority of the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury, but not hitherto indexed. Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's name, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. The indentures themselves can date from a year or two earlier than this return. (The sample entry shown on this scan is taken from a Bristol return. A poll of freeholders of more than 40s per annum of land, to elect a member of parliament for Warwickshire, was held at Warwick 31 October to 7 November 1820. This poll book, listing the voters for each township, parish or borough, was published under the inspection of J. W. Unett, agent for Francis Lawley, one of the candidates, in 1821. In each area the voters are listed by initial letter of surname, with abode (often elsewhere), and whether they voted for Lawley or for his opponent, Richard Spooner.JEFFCOAT. A List of the Freemen and Householders of the City of Oxford, Registered July 31st, 1834, as Entitled to Vote in the Election of Members for the said City. This starts with an alphabetical list of the freemen of the city, which gives (as in the sample scan) full name, address and occupation. A poll to elect knights of the shire to represent the Western Division of the county of Kent in parliament was held in 1835, the candidates being Thomas Law Hodges (H), Thomas Rider (R) and sir William R. P. Geary (G). The poll started on January 19th; Rider withdrawing his name on that first day, the poll was closed prematurely, many electors not yet having voted. This poll book lists all the electors, whether voting or not, arranged by district and township or parish. For each elector the full name is given (surname first) and residence (often not the place for which qualified to vote). Votes are indicated by dashes in the right-hand columns. JEFFCOAT. This poll book lists all 2145 voters, as well as those electors who did not vote. In both cases, the lists are divided into a single register of freemen, and then the non-freemen arranged by parish or ward - All Saints, Cowley, Holywell, St Aldate, St Clement, St Ebbe, St Giles, St John, St Martin, St Mary Magdalen, St Mary the Virgin, St Michael, St Peter in the East, St Peter le Bailey, and St Thomas. The votes of those who voted are shown on the right hand side of the page.
