Massachusetts Criminals, Litigants, Lawyers and Jurors
(1673-1692)
The only surviving complete volume of the records of the courts held by the Governor and Assistants of the Colony of the Massachusetts Bay is for the period 1673 to 1692. It was transcribed by John Noble, and published by order of the Board of Aldermen of the City of Boston, New England, as County Commissioners of the County of Suffolk, Massachusetts. Under English law overseas colonies were generally deemed to fall under the jurisdiction of the Admiralty, and were subject to English law varied by local circumstances. These Courts of Assistants therefore also function as Courts of Admiralty; the courts had jurisiction over criminal cases and also in civil disputes between parties. In practice, many of the names that occur in the record are just those of the members of the grand jury and the lesser juries (appointed from among the adult male householders of the colony) before whom the cases were tried.HEWENS. A poll of freeholders of more than 40s per annum of land, to elect a member of parliament for Warwickshire, was held at Warwick 31 October to 7 November 1820. This poll book, listing the voters for each township, parish or borough, was published under the inspection of J. W. Unett, agent for Francis Lawley, one of the candidates, in 1821. In each area the voters are listed by initial letter of surname, with abode (often elsewhere), and whether they voted for Lawley or for his opponent, Richard Spooner.HEWENS. | Leicester Poll Book: Non-Resident Voters
(1832)
A poll was taken on 12 and 13 December 1832 for the election of two representatives in Parliament for the borough of Leicester, the candidates being William Evans esquire (E.), Wynn Ellis esquire (El.) and J. W. Boughton Leigh esquire (L.). This poll book, printed by J. G. Brown of Leicester, gives the name, residence and occupation of all the electors, divided into four categories: resident voters, non-resident voters, resident non-voters, and non-resident non-voters. For those who polled, their votes are marked on the right hand side. Under the 1832 Reform Act the franchise within the borough had been extended to all (adult male) owners or tenants of property worth £10 a year or more.HEWENS. A poll for the election of two knights of the shire to represent South Warwickshire was held 24 November 1868: the candidates were Lord Hyde (H.), Sir R. N. C. Hamilton (H.), H. C. Wise, Esq. (W.) and John Hardy, Esq. (H.). This poll book lists all those electors who voted; the county franchise included not only male freeholders of 40s a year, but also £10 copyholders and long-leaseholders, and £50 short-leaseholders and tenants. In addition, where no vote was cast the elector's number and name are given, the name in italics. The names are arranged by polling district and then by parish or township. Freeholders holding requisite property in a district are listed there, but might well reside elsewhere. The right-hand column indicates how each man voted. HEWENS.
