Apprentices registered in Yorkshire (1797) Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's name, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. The indentures themselves can date from a year or two earlier than this return. (The sample entry shown on this scan is taken from a Bristol return. Baptists in Liverpool supporting Missionary Work in Bengal (1804-1805) The Baptist Missionary Society established a mission at Serampore in Bengal. Letters from the missionaries from 27 June 1804 to 20 October 1805 describing their work were published in England as 'Periodical Accounts relative to the Baptist Missionary Society', prefaced by 'A List of Persons baptised in Bengal, belonging to the Church of Christ at Serampore' running back to 1 November 1795. With this was this appendix, a list of subscriptions, collections and donations from 1 October 1804 to 1 October 1805, including (pages 146-150) 'Collections and Donations for Translating the Scriptures into the Eastern Languages'. Subscribers to the African Institution (1811) The African Institution was founded in London 14 April 1807, with a view to 'diffusing useful knowledge and exciting industry among the inhabitants of Africa', and to publicising in Britain the agricultural and commercial possibilities of the African continent, in view of the imminence of the end of the slave trade. Among the society's first ventures was the establishment of cotton plantations in Sierra Leone. A subscription of 60 guineas or upwards at one time constituted a hereditary Governor; of 30 guineas at one time, a Governor for life; of 3 guineas a year, an annual Governor; of 10 guineas at one time, a Member for life; of 1 guinea a year, an annual Member. Inhabitants of Liverpool (1824) Volume I of Edward Baines's History, Directory, and Gazetteer of the County Palatine of Lancaster, published at Liverpool in 1824, includes this directory of Liverpool, which in addition extends to cover those principal inhabitants living on the Cheshire side of the Mersey. Freeholders voting in Castle ward, Northumberland (1826) An election to choose two knights of the shire to represent Northumberland took place at Alnwick from 20 June to 6 July 1826. The candidates were Henry Thomas Liddell (L), Matthew Bell (B), Thomas Wentworth Beaumont (Bt) and Viscount Howick (H). The franchise included all freeholders of property worth 40 shillings or more per annum: each had two votes, but could plump for a single candidate. This poll book was published in 1827 and lists the voters from each ward: the freeholder's full name (surname first), residence, and the nature of the freehold (such as 'house at Corbridge'). The votes are shown in the right hand columns, with plumpers shown by a dagger. Castle ward included North Shields and the surrounding countryside. FLOUNDERS. Cost: £6.00.
