Somerset testators and legatees (1501-1530) Somerset was almost coextensive with the diocese of Bath and Wells, which exercised local probate jurisdiction through its consistory and archdeaconry courts: but superior to the diocese was the province of Canterbury. Somerset testators who also had property outside the county had their wills proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury (PCC). The Somerset Record Society embarked on a program of publishing genealogical abstracts of the registered copy wills of Somerset testators in the PCC archives, and in 1903 (volume xvi) printed abstracts edited by the Reverend F. W. Weaver from the PCC registers 1501-1503 (register Blamyr), 1504-1506 (Holgrave), 1506-1508 (Adeane), 1508-1511 (Bennett), 1511-1514 (Fetiplace), 1514-1517 (Holder), 1517-1520 (Ayloffe), 1520-1522 (Maynwaryng), 1523-1525 (Bodfelde), 1525-1528 (Porch) and 1529-1530 (Jankyn). In addition, the volume includes abstracts of 48 Somerset copy wills in the registers of the Archbishops of Canterbury at Lambeth Palace Library from 1363 to 1491. The heading of each abstract gives the year of making the will (not the year of probate) and the testator's name in bold. Below that is the quire number and name of the PCC register. Date and details of probate are given at the foot of each abstract. Spellings of surnames are preserved as they appear in the registered copy wills, and may vary within a single document. CLEMAN. Masters of Merchantmen (1785) The Daily Universal Register of February 1785 includes a section entitled Ship News. This is compiled from reports from Portsmouth, Deal, Milford, Poole, Standgate Creek and Gravesend as to merchant shipping movements; news of losses and sightings coming in from various ports; a list of Ships Arrived in the (London) River, in the Clyde, in the Downs, off Beachy Head, off Dover, off Poole, at Alicante, Amsterdam, Ancona, Baltimore, Barbadoes, Belfast, Bilbao, Bordeaux, Boston (New England), Bristol, Bryar, Cadiz, Campvere, Charlestown, Cork, Cowes, Creek, Cuxhaven, Dartmouth, Dominica, Dover, Dublin, Dunkirk, Falmouth, Faro, Gibraltar, Glendore, Grenada, Halifax (Nova Scotia), Havre de Grace, Helvoetsluys, Hull, Kinsale, Lancaster, Leghorn, Leith, Lisbon, Liverpool, Londonderry, Lough Ryan, Margate, Milford, Mogador, Naples, New York, Newcastle (on Tyne), Newry, Ostend, Penzance, Philadelphia, Plymouth, Poole, Portsmouth, Rotterdam, St Domingo, St Kitts, St Lucar, St Lucia, St Marks, Scilly, Sealock, Smyrna, Standgate Creek, Tenerife, Texel, Waterford, Zeirickser, and in 'Africa', the Isles de Lo's, Jamaica, North Carolina and Virginia; and Reports of Ships made at the Custom House in London. Except in the home ports, the register refers only to British shipping: each ship is usually identified merely by its name, and the master's surname, although masters' christian names are given occasionally. Sailors of H. M. S. Miranda who fought in the Azoff Sea (1854-1856) Sebastopol in the Crimea was the great Russian naval arsenal on the Black Sea. A combined assault by British, French and Turkish troops resulted in the reduction of Sebastopol and led to the Treaty of Paris of 27 April 1856, guaranteeing the independence of the Ottoman Empire. By Admiralty Order the Crimea Medal was awarded to sailors and marines present during the campaign, between 17 September 1854 (the first landing at Eupatoria) and 9 September 1855 (when the allies secured Sebastopol). Her Majesty's Ship Miranda, a 14-gun screw steamer, took part in the assault. Four clasps to this medal were awarded to the men present in the actions at Sebastopol itself, Inkerman, Balaklave (Balaclava) and (the sea of) Azoff. The Sea of Azoff (Azov, Azoph, Azof), east of the Crimean peninsula, is an arm of the Black Sea, with which it is united by the Straits of Kertch or Kaffa. This is the Azoff Clasp Roll, recording the names of the men from the ship who took part in the actions on the Azoff Sea during the Crimean War. CLEMAN. Cost: £8.00.	Sample scan, click to enlarge
Sailors and marines on board Her Majesty's ship Vulcan (1860) The China Medal was awarded to soldiers and sailors involved in the various actions of the war against China, in which this ship was engaged in 1860. The medals were either delivered on board or sent on in 1862: except that many of the men were no longer immediately traceable, and the remarks on the roll show that some medals were not sent on for several years, and some were never sent. After the main roll there is a section showing which of the men also qualified for clasps. Separate clasps were awarded for men who had been in receipt of the China Medal of 1842; for the taking of Fatshan in 1857, Canton in 1857, Taku Forts in 1858, Taku Forts in 1860, and Pekin in 1860. Most of the men on this ship are shown as having been given the Taku Forts 1860 clasp, for being actually present at the capture of the Taku Forts 21 August 1860. CLEMAN. Cost: £8.00. Men of the 57th Regiment who fought in the New Zealand War (1860-1870) New Zealand War Medal roll for the 57th (The West Middlesex) Regiment of Foot: for service in the New Zealand campaign 1863 to 1867: the rolls were compiled following a general order in 1869 and the medals were distributed in 1870. The regiment had been serving at Poonah in India, and was moved to New Zealand in November 1860; the men returned to England in April 1867. CLEMAN. Cost: £8.00.	Sample scan, click to enlarge
