(1580-1601) Mrs S. C. Lomas of the Historical Manuscripts Commission prepared this calendar of the manuscripts of the Earl of Ancaster preserved at Grimsthorpe, published in 1907. The records covered are from 1550 to 1737, but the bulk of this volume is given over to an edition of the correspondence of Peregrine lord Willoughby, who was appointed governor of Bergen-op-Zoom in 1586, and spent the next ten years commanding English and Dutch forces against those of Spain. There are also a few pages (449 to 452) dealing with a scattering of ancient deeds (from c.1160 to 1547); some items from inventories (452-459, c.1522 to after 1742) and household accounts (459-482, 1560-1661) which attracted Mrs Lomas's attention; and notes from a muster roll of Baberg hundred, Suffolk, of about 1522, from which some names are given in the text.BOREEL. | England and Venice
(1642-1643) The Master of the Rolls directed the compilation of translations of archives from northern Italy relating to English affairs. This volume, edited by Allen B. Hinds and published in 1925, is partly based on transcripts in the Public Record Office in London of major sources from the state archives housed in the Frari at Venice, and partly taken directly from the originals, in particular the Dispacci, Inghilterra. Much of this volume, covering March 1642 to July 1643, consists of the letters of Giovanni Giustinian the Venetian ambassador in England, and of Gerolamo Agostini, the Venetian secretary there; and as such contain descriptions of unfolding political events in Britain and northern Europe as seen by Italian diplomats. But there were also Englishmen actively trading with Venice and its sphere of influence in the eastern Mediterranean, and these too are mentioned from time to time.BOREEL. | England and Venice
(1643-1647) The Master of the Rolls directed the compilation of translations of archives from northern Italy relating to English affairs. This volume, edited by Allen B. Hinds and published in 1926, is largely based on transcripts in the Public Record Office in London of major sources from the Venetian archives, in particular the Dispacci, Inghilterra. Most of this volume consists of the letters of Secretary Agostini from London, the Advices of London forwarded from Paris, and the Esposizioni Principi; and as such contain descriptions of unfolding political events in Britain as seen by Italian diplomats. But there were also Englishmen actively trading with Venice and its sphere of influence in the eastern Mediterranean: Venice was struggling with the Turks for possession of Candia (Crete), and English merchants, mercenaries and ships were involved on both sides. There is even the report of a raid by Barbary pirates on the Cornish coast in which 200 women were carried off for slaves.BOREEL. Cost: £4.00. | Sample scan, click to enlarge
| Hastings family correspondence
(1528-1699) John Harley of the Historical Manuscripts Commission was invited by Reginald Rawdon Hastings to examine his family's extensive archives at the Manor House, Ashby de la Zouche, in Leicestershire. Harley produced a detailed calendar, of which this is the second volume, published in 1930, Hastings himself having since died, and Harley having been killed at Gallipoli, the work being completed by his colleague, Francis Bickley. This volume covers four categories of the records: correspondence of the Hastings family 1528 to 1699; newsletters sent by professional reporters in London 1669 to 1693; papers relating to the Band of Gentlemen Pensioners, of which Theophilus 7th earl of Huntingdon was captaon, 1677 to 1685; and correspondence of the Rawdon family, 1641 to 1694, including papers of George Monck, afterwards Duke of Albemarle, when commanding in Ulster. | Foreigners
(1760-1761) This calendar of Home Office papers was edited by Joseph Redington and published in 1878. The period covered by this index is from the accession of king George III, 25 October 1760, to 31 December 1761. The documents abstracted were a part of the great archive called the State Papers Domestic, and comprised letters to and from the Secretaries of State, and other letters; reports; memorials and petitions; and warrants of various kinds. Some repetitive material was reduced into tables. We have teased out this diverse and heterogeneous material into separate indexes for each subject. BOREEL.
