Traders in Canterbury
(1392-1592)
No man or woman could trade in the city of Canterbury without having obtained 'freedom' of the city, unless they paid an annual fee to do so. Admissions of freemen were recorded on the Chamberlains' Accounts of the city, which were prepared annually from Lady Day (25 March) to Lady Day until 1752, and thereafter each set runs from 1 January to 31 December. The accounts for 1392 are incomplete, but thereafter until 1800 there is a complete series except for the years 1455 to 1457 and the year 1552-3. Joseph Meadows Cowper, Honorary Librarian to the Corporation, transcribed and privately printed in 1904 the lists of the Intrantes - those persons, not being free of the city, who paid the annual fine to trade - for the period 1392 to 1592. The names are arranged by ward (Burgate, Newyngate, Westgate, Worgate and Northgate, and give full name, (sometimes) occupation, and fee paid. ARNSON. Cost: £4.00.  | Sample scan, click to enlarge

Each year the best soldiers were chosen for long service and good conduct medals. This register gives rank, name, regimental number, and date of recommendation. (The sample scan is from the 34th foot). The register is essentially a register of recommendations, but from 1877-8 onwards there are also details of the issue of the medals. ARNSON. Naturalizations
(1922)
The Home Office issued monthly lists of aliens to whom Certificates of Naturalization had been granted by the Secretary of State and whose oaths of allegiance had been registered in the Home Office. These notices, from January to December 1922, refer to naturalizations from December 1921 to November 1922. In January the list gave full name, surname first; country of origin; date of taking the oath of allegiance; place of residence; and occupation. From February onwards the format was changed - full name (surname first) with any aliases; country of origin; occupation; full postal address; date of taking the oath. Under the Trustee Act 1925 s. 27, notices were gazetted giving the names of deceased (surname first, in capitals); address, description, and date of death; names, addresses and occupations of persons to whom notices of claims against the estate were to be given, and names (in brackets) of personal representatives; and the date on or before which notices of claim were to be given.
