Inhabitants of Preston in Lancashire (1653-1813) The records of the three main courts of the borough - the Court Leet, the Mayor's Court and the Inquest or Inquisition of Office - were entered in three thick folio volumes in the municipal archives. Extracts from these, by Anthony Hewitson, a local historian, were published in the Preston Guardian from 16 November 1901 to 19 September 1903, and then revised and printed in this volume in 1905. These extracts necessarily dwell on the quaint and curious, and are mainly from the 17th and early 18th century.	Sample scan, click to enlarge
Manchester Directory (1825) W. Parson compiled this Manchester trades directory included in the second volume of the History, Directory, and Gazetteer of the County Palatine of Lancaster, by Edward Baines, published in 1825. Residents of Exeter (1828) The 'Exeter Itinerary and General Directory, ... A Walk through the City and Suburbs, with an Account of the Public Buildings, and Institutions; an Abridged History of the Cathedral; A List of the Body Corporate, Public Offices, Companies, &c. &c. Embellished with a neat Map of the City', published in June 1828, includes this 'List of the Nobility, Gentry, Merchants, and Traders Of Exeter, Heavitree, St. Thomas, Alphington and Ide'. Petitioning Creditors and Solicitors (1828-1829) Principal creditors petitioning to force a bankruptcy (but often close relatives of the bankrupt helping to protect his assets). Perry's Bankrupt and Insolvent Gazette was printed monthly for subscribers only, and included a section entitled Bankrupts, summarizing notices of bankruptcy proceedings. Volume 4, for 1829, covers bankruptcies gazetted from 2 December 1828 to 24 November 1829. The Gazette provided an index to the names of the principal bankrupts, but we have prepared this index to the names of the principal creditors, together with some stray names and solicitors from the records. Minor offenders in Chorley, Lancashire (1834-1835) Justices of the Peace throughout England and Wales had the power of summary conviction for certain minor offences, principally vagrancy, poaching, petty theft, bastardy and assault. The magistrates' clerks for each district were required by Parliament to make a return of the names, offences, terms of imprisonment, and whether a written record was made of the proceedings, for the period from Michaelmas (29 September) 1834 to Michaelmas 1835. The return vary in completeness from magistrate to magistrate - the fullest returns also give the offender's address, the amount of fine or length of imprisonment, and/or the names of the justices. Dissolutions of partnerships in England and Wales (1849) Perry's Bankrupt and Insolvent Gazette, issued monthly, included lists of dissolutions of partnerships gazetted in England and Wales. The names of the partners are given in full, surnames in capitals, followed by trade and address, and date of the end of the partnership. Each entry usually ends with the phrase 'Debts by ...', indicating which partner intended to continue, and resume the responsibilities of, the business.
