London Attorneys (1791) A list of attorneys residing in London, Westminster, the borough of Southwark and their environs, from the Universal British Directory. Those without a mark before the name practised in the King's Bench; those with a (C) in the Common Pleas; and those with a * in both courts.	Sample scan, click to enlarge
Masters of apprentices registered in Shropshire (1794) Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's name, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. The indentures themselves can date from a year or two earlier than this return. (The sample entry shown on this scan is taken from a Bristol return. Inhabitants of Market Drayton in Shropshire (1790-1797) The provincial sections of the Universal British Directory include lists of gentry and traders from each town and the surrounding countryside, with names of local surgeons, lawyers, postmasters, carriers, &c. (the sample scan here is from the section for Hull). The directory started publication in 1791, but was not completed for some years, and the provincial lists, sent in by local agents, can date back as early as 1790 and as late as 1797. Bankrupts (1786-1806) William Smith's abstracts of bankrupts, dividends and certificates for England and Wales from 1786 to June 1806. Newcastle-under-Lyme Directory (1818) The Staffordshire General and Commercial Directory was published by W. Parson and T. Bradshaw in 1818 in sections, the first seven relating to the north of the county: 1. Newcastle-under-Lyme; 2. Golden Hill, Tunstall &c. (including Talk'o'th'Hill, Red Street, Chesterton, Greenfield, Sandiford, New Field and Brown Hills); 3. Burslem &c. (including Longport, Cobridge and Hot Lane); 4. Hanley and Shelton; 5. Stoke, Etruria and Penkhull; 6. Lane End &c. (including Fenton and Lane Delph); 7. Leek. In each section the traders are listed alphabetically under surname, with occupation and address. Cheltenham Directory (1820) 'The Gloucestershire Directory, containing the Names & Residences of Professional Gentlemen, Merchants, Manufacturers, and Tradesmen, in Gloucester Cheltenham Cirencester Tewkesbury Stroud Wotton-under-Edge Dursley Tetbury Painswick &c. &c. Embellished with a neat engraved Plan of the City of Gloucester. By R. Gell & T. Bradshaw' was published at Gloucester in 1820. It includes this general alphabetical directory for Cheltenham.
