The Prerogative Court of Canterbury's main jurisdiction was central and southern England and Wales, as well as over sailors &c dying abroad: these brief abstracts, compiled under the title "Year Books of Probates", and printed in 1906, usually give address, date of probate and name of executor or administrator. They are based on the Probate Act Books, cross-checked with the original wills, from which additional details are, occasionally, added. | Massachusetts Bay freemen
(1642-1649)
The Company of the Massachusetts Bay in New England was established by royal charter in 1629, the area being settled from 1630 onwards; the charter was withdrawn in 1684. The colony at this period did not include Plymouth or Maine. This court book, compiled by the Increase Nowell, company secretary, also includes memoranda concerning land grants and disputes, official appointments, &c. It was edited by Nathaniel B. Shurtleff, and printed by order of the legislature of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1853. Months are given in the dating in Puritan fashion, i. e. March is 1mo, April 2mo, &c. | Purchasers of Bishops' Lands: Yorkshire
(1647-1651)
16 November 1646 Parliament ordained the sale of all the lands and estates of the bishops and archbishops for the service of the Commonwealth. This account, printed in 1834, is a transcript from a manuscript presented to the British Museum by William Bray (Add. 9049). It gives in tabular form the details of the conveyances of the lands to private individuals, showing the name of the bishopric; the date of the conveyance; county; description of the lands; purchaser; and purchase money. A total of over £624,158 was raised: after the restoration of the monarchy these estates were returned to the Church, with compensation. | Sample scan, click to enlarge

The State Papers Domestic cover all manner of business relating to Britain, Ireland and the colonies, conducted in the office of the Secretary of State as well as other miscellaneous records. These records are from November 1655 to June 1656: there is also a set of abstracts of navy correspondence.

| Wandsworth Burials
(1656)
The ancient parish of Wandsworth in Surrey comprised the single township of Wandsworth, including the hamlets of Garratt, Half Farthing and Summers Town. It lay in the archdeaconry of Surrey of the diocese of Winchester: unfortunately, few bishop's transcripts of Surrey parish registers survive earlier than 1800. Although the original parish registers of Wandsworth doubtless commenced in 1538, the volume(s) before 1603 had been lost by the 19th century. In 1889 a careful transcript by John Traviss Squire of the first three surviving registers was printed, and we have now indexed it year by year. The early burial registers contain little detail - date of burial, and full name. For the burial of children, the father's name is also stated; for the burial of wives, the husband's. Such details as date or cause of death, age, address or occupation are almost never given. The burial registers are considerably more bulky than the baptism registers, because the burying ground was used by Dissenters, who formed a large part of the population. | Sample scan, click to enlarge

The Quarter Sessions minute books for the North Riding from October 1647 to January 1658 were edited by the Rev. J. C. Atkinson for the North Riding Record Society and published in 1887. These are abstracts of sessional orders, minutes of criminal cases, memoranda and other entries of record concerning the administration of the riding. Adult male householders of substance (gentlemen and yeomen) from the constituent townships in the riding were liable to serve on the quarter sessions juries, and lists of the jurors present are attached to each part of the proceedings. | Sample scan, click to enlarge
