Gun & Co. of 6 Prince of Wales' Road, London, in about 1870 published this fifth 'List of Next of Kin & Heirs, &c., who have been Advertised for in the English, Irish, Scotch, United States of America, Canadian, Australian, East and West Indian, and other Newspapers, since 1704. Money & Property to the value of many Millions Sterling want Claimants'. The list of 4,128 names gives surname, christian name, and, occasionally, locality. | Missing Next-of-Kin and Heirs-at-Law

The Unclaimed Money Registry and Next-of-Kin Advertisement Office of F. H. Dougal & Co., on the Strand in London, published a comprehensive 'Index to Advertisements for Next of Kin, Heirs at Law, Legatees, &c., &c., who have been Advertised for to Claim Money and Property in Great Britain and all Parts of the World; also Annuitants, Shareholders, Intestates, Testators, Missing Friends, Creditors or their Representatives, Claimants, Unclaimed and Reclaimed Dividends and Stock, Citations, Administrations, Rewards for Certificates, Wills, Advertisements, &c., Claims, Unclaimed Balances, Packages, Addresses, Parish Clerks' Notices, Foreign Intestates, &c., &c.' The original list was compiled about 1860, but from materials dating back even into the 18th century: most of the references belong to 1850 to 1880. For each entry only a name is given, sometimes with a placename added in brackets: there may be a reference number, but there is no key by which the original advertisement may be traced. The enquirer of the time had to remit £1 for a 'Full and Authentic Copy of the Original Advertisement, together with name and date of newspaper in which the same appeared'. | Sample scan, click to enlarge

| County Court Judgments: Middlesex

Extracts from the Registry of County Courts' Judgments. These judgments were not necessarily for debt. In some cases they were for damages on properly disputed causes of action, but no distinction was made on the Register. Judgments settled otherwise than through the Court may appear, unless 'Satisfaction' was entered up within the fourteen days allowed for that purpose. The Metropolitan Police Register of Joiners (MEPO 4/335) lists policemen joining the force 1 July 1878 to 31 December 1891 (warrant numbers 62845 to 77318). The register is alphabetical, in so far as the recruits are listed chronologically grouped under first letter of surname (I and J, and U and V being treated as single initials). It gives Date of Appointment, Name, Number of Warrant, Cause of Removal from Force (resigned, dismissed, promoted or died), and Date of Removal. | Sample scan, click to enlarge
| Outstanding soldiers of the Essex Regiment

Each year the best soldiers of the regiment were chosen for long service and good conduct medals. This register gives rank, name, regimental number, and date of recommendation. (The sample scan is from the East Surrey regiment). The register is essentially a register of recommendations, annotated with details of the issue of the medals. Where no gratuity accompanied the medal, the entry is marked 'W. G.' (without gratuity); where, for one reason or another, the medal was not issued, the entry is marked 'N. S.' (not sanctioned) and struck through. The regiment was based on the 44th Regimental District - Warley. The 1st battalion returned from India 28 November 1884, and in 1885 was stationed at Colchester, and in 1895 at Fermoy. The 2nd battalion embarked for Gibraltar in 1882, was in Egypt by 1884, adding "Nile, 1884-85" to the regimental honours. The battalion was moved to Malta in 1887; on to Cyprus in 1889; and thence to India in 1892, and was stationed at Lucknow by 1895. The battalion was then transferred to South Africa, where it gained the honours "South Africa, 1899-1902", "Relief of Kimberley" and "Paardeberg" for the regiment. | Sample scan, click to enlarge

| Convicts released from borstal on licence wanted by the police

The Police Gazette was published by Authority by the London Metropolitan Police, and circulated, as confidential, to the police forces throughout Britain and Ireland. The contents were based on the information routinely submitted to the Criminal Record Office. One of the regular features was a section entitled 'Convicts on Licence, Persons under Police Supervision and others whose apprehensions are sought for failing to comply with the requirements of the Prevention of Crimes Act'. The details given are: the convict's full name (in bold), with any aliases; C. R. O. number, year of birth, height, complexion, hair colour, eye colour, distinguishing marks such as scars; occupation; birthplace. There then follows a resume of the previous conviction and details of release; reason for revocation of the licence (usually failure to report to the police); name of the officer proving service of the notice; name of the officer proving identity; previous convictions; names of police forces that had had contact with the indivudual in the past. Often there is a police portrait. Variations of surname spelling and aliases are noted in the descriptions, and these variants and aliases have also been indexed.
