The 3rd (East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs) was in two battalions. The 1st battalion embarked for Malta in 1851, and were in 1860 serving in China. The home depot was at Limerick. The second battalion was also based there, but was sent to Malta in 1858. It was transferred to New Zealand, taking part in the conflict there, and returned to England in 1866, and Ireland in 1869: the regimental depot was at Birr.
