The lists of customs officers at the outports of Great Britain and Ireland give the full names of the staff arranged by rank - usually the collector, controller, clerks, landing surveyors, searchers, superintendent of lockers, chief tide surveyor and inspector of water guard, tide surveyors, inspectors of patrol, and inspecting commander of coast guard. When searching the early records it is important to note that Saddleworth, although being in the West Riding of Yorkshire, was a chapelry of the parish of Rochdale in Lancashire, and so lay in the diocese of Chester (and later Manchester), not in the diocese of York. (1849-1854)
Non-commissioned officers and men of the Royal Artillery discharged and recommended for medals and gratuities. The lists state rank, name, battalion or corps, date of recommendation, date awarded, and total length of service (in years and days), with length of foreign service (in years and months) and as serjeant and staff serjeant (in years and months). The lists themselves are basically of recommendations, then annotated to show award of medal and/or gratuity, which in most cases naturally followed. Where an award was not made, the reason is usually given: there is a column showing when the man became non-effective, through discharge, or had been deprived of the award for some reason. Where a man's name is crossed through it should not be assumed that he was deleted from the list: sometimes the name is crossed through when the medal has been dispatched. | Boys entering Harrow School

This First Volume of the Second Series of the Harrow School Register was edited by J. H. Stogdon and published in 1925. The boys are listed by term of entrance, and then alphabetically by surname and christian names (in bold). Next, in brackets and in italics, is the school house to which he belonged - or, H. B. indicating a day boy whose family lived in Harrow. Stogdon then gives the father's surname and initials, and address. In cases where the boy was prominent in sports at school, or won academic prizes, scholarships &c., that is given; then the year of leaving the school; and a synopsis of his career, so far as known.
