Each year the best soldiers of the regiment were chosen for long service and good conduct medals. This register gives rank, name, regimental number, and date of recommendation. (The sample scan is from the 34th foot). The register is essentially a register of recommendations, but from 1877-8 onwards there are also details of the issue of the medals. The second battalion was sent to Malta in 1877 and on to India in 1878.

The regiment was sent to Ireland in 1877, and on to Malta in 1880.

The regiment was in the East Indies throughout this period, taking part in the Afghan War of 1879 to 1880.

The regiment was moved from England to Scotland in 1875, and in 1879 from there to Gibraltar.

(The sample scan is from the 34th foot). The register is essentially a register of recommendations, but from 1877-8 onwards there are also details of the issue of the medals. The regiment, which had taken part in the battles of Charasiah, Cabul and Candahar) was moved from India to South Africa in 1881, to take part in the Boer war.
