The 13th, or Prince Albert's Regiment of Light Infantry was in two battalions. The 1st battalion embarked for Gibraltar in 1851, and served successively in the Crimea, at the Cape of Good Hope, and in India (1857 to 1864, being based at Gorruckpore). The home depot was at Fermoy in Ireland. Having returned to England in 1864, the battalion was moved to Ireland in 1866, and to Gibraltar in 1867. The second battalion was also based at Fermoy, but embarked for the Cape in 1859, thence to Mauritius in 1863, and back to England in 1867. Each year just a handful of outstanding soldiers of the regiment were chosen for good conduct medals and gratuities: these are listed here. In 1861 the regiment was moved to Scotland; in 1862 to England; and in 1865 to India. It returned to England in 1864, and to Ireland in 1866: the regimental depot was at Templemore. In 1869 the regiment was sent to the East Indies.
