1a. Return of all persons appointed to situations in the department of the Excise, and of persons nominated as expectants to receive instructions to qualify them to become officers: giving date of appointment or nomination; name; station; salary and emolument.
1b. Return of all persons re-appointed to situations in the Excise: giving name; station in which dropped; salary and emoluments; when and to what station re-appointed; salary and emoluments. This return is split into England, Scotland and Ireland.
2. Return of the different persons appointed to situations in the departments of the Customs: stating port; office; name of officer; when admitted; and salary and emoluments.

The commander of the British forces transmitted to the Secretary-at-War this return of casualties among non-commissioned officers and men sustained at and after the battle of Alma, 20 September 1854. This was the opening battle of the Crimean War, in which British forces seized the heights above the river Alma. | Science Schools and Classes: Elementary Examination: Class Lists

The Science and Art Department of the Committee of Council on Education published these class lists giving the names of all the successful candidates in the examination of science schools and classes taken in May 1869. The candidates were of three levels: honours; second stage or advanced examination; third stage or elementary examination. Twenty-three subjects were offered. These are the lists for the elementary examination. The tables, arranged subject by subject, give the candidate's full name (surname first), age, and occupation - or, in the case of those not yet of working age, father's occupation, preceded by (f.). Many candidates sat and were successful in more than one subject, and so appear in more than one list. The subjects are: I. Practical, Plane and Solid Geometry; II. Machine Construction; III. | Mining Fatalities: Western Scotland

The fourteen Inspectors of Mines for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland made separate annual reports, each including a tabular account of fatal mining accidents within his area, giving date; sequential number of accident for the area for the year; the name of the mine; where situate; the owner's or agent's name; the full name of the person killed; his occupation; age; cause of death, and remarks. There are in all fifteen tables, for: Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and part of Somerset; Cumberland, Northumberland and Furness; Ireland; the Midlands; North and East Lancashire; North Staffordshire, Cheshire and most of Shropshire; North Wales (including an adjoining part of Shropshire) and the Isle of Man; Western Scotland; the rest of Scotland; South Durham, Westmorland and the North Riding of Yorkshire; Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Wiltshire, Monmouthshire and adjoining parts of South Wales; South Staffordshire and Worcestershire (the Black Country); the rest of South Wales; western Lancashire; and Yorkshire (other than the North Riding) and Lincolnshire.GILMARTIN. What is commonly called the Zulu War Medal was awarded to those British soldiers who fought in a series of conflicts in southern Africa from 1877 (the Kaffir War) through to 1879 (the Zulu War). In 1880 the various units submitted returns of the officers, non-commissioned officers and men 'entitled to the Medal for Military Operations in South Africa during 1877-8-9' and these 'medal rolls' are now in the National Archives. The returns are made with the information arranged in twelve columns:
1. Rank and name
2. Regimental number and rank at the time the medal was earned
3. Whether in possession of medal for previous wars
4. Whether engaged against the Gaikas, Galekas and other Kaffir tribes 1877-8
5. Whether engaged against Pokwane 1878
6. Whether engaged against the Griquas 1878
7. Whether engaged against the Zulus 1879
8. Whether engaged against Sekukuni as set forth in Par. 2. G. O.
9. Whether engaged against Moirosi's stronghold
10. Entitled to medal without clasp under Par. 4.
11. Serving with regiment, depot, dead, discharged, deserted, &c.

| Outstanding soldiers of the 76th Regiment of Foot
(1875-1881)
Each year the best soldiers of the regiment were chosen for long service and good conduct medals. This register gives rank, name, regimental number, and date of recommendation. (The sample scan is from the 34th foot). The register is essentially a register of recommendations, but from 1877-8 onwards there are also details of the issue of the medals. | Sherwood Foresters fighting in Egypt

The war medal roll for the Egyptian campaign of 1882 is annotated to show those men actually present at Tel-el-Kebir, and thereby also entitled to the Tel-el-Kebir clasp. In addition, there follows an almost duplicate roll of men entitled to the Bronze Star granted by the Khedive of Egypt in recognition of the campaign. The 2nd battalion, The Sherwood Foresters (Derbyshire Regiment), embarked from England to Gibraltar in 1881, and to Egypt early in 1882: by the end of the year they had sailed for India. This medal roll was compiled at Lucknow in December 1882. The battalion went on to take part in the Sikkim expedition of 1888, and the North West Frontier of India campaign of 1897 to 1898.GILMARTIN.
