(1843-1857)
The Metropolitan Police Register of Joiners (MEPO 4/334) lists policemen joining the force 1 January 1843 to 1 April 1857 (warrant numbers 19893 to 35804). The register is alphabetical, in so far as the recruits are listed chronologically grouped under first letter of surname. It gives Date of Appointment, Name, Number of Warrant, Cause of Removal from Force (resigned, dismissed, promoted or died), and Date of Removal. Although the register was closed for new entrants at the end of 1842, the details of removals were always recorded, some being twenty or more years later. Those recruits not formerly in the police, the army, or some government department, were required to provide (normally) at least two letters of recommendation from persons of standing, and details of these are entered on the facing pages: the names in these are indexed separately - this index refers only to the police constables. Where a recruit was only recently arrived in the metropolis, the names and addresses of the recommenders can be invaluable for tracing where he came from.GIDDINS. A poll for the election of two knights of the shire to represent the county of Huntingdon took place 2 April 1857: the candidates were James Rust (1192 votes), Edward Fellowes (1106) and John Moyer Heathcote (1106). This poll book lists those electors who voted, described as 'freeholders', although the county franchise included not only male freeholders of 40s a year, but also £10 copyholders and long-leaseholders, and £50 short-leaseholders and tenants. The names are arranged by parish or township, and the residence of each voter is given. Many of these freeholders did not live in the place from which they acquired the right to vote. | Long-stay Paupers in Workhouses: Hitchin
(1861)
This comprehensive return by the Poor Law Board for England and Wales in July 1861 revealed that of the 67,800 paupers aged 16 or over, exclusive of vagrants, then in the Board's workhouses, 14,216 (6,569 men, 7,647 women) had been inmates for a continuous period of five years and upwards. The return lists all these long-stay inmates from each of the 626 workhouses that had been existence for five years and more, giving full name; the amount of time that each had been in the workhouse (years and months); the reason assigned why the pauper in each case was unable to sustain himself or herself; and whether or not the pauper had been brought up in a district or workhouse school (very few had). The commonest reasons given for this long stay in the workhouse were: old age and infirm (3,331); infirm (2,565); idiot (1,565); weak mind (1,026); imbecile (997); and illness (493). GIDDINS. | Outstanding soldiers of the Lancashire Fusiliers
(1881-1901)
Each year the best soldiers of the regiment were chosen for long service and good conduct medals. This register gives rank, name, regimental number, and date of recommendation. (The sample scan is from the East Surrey regiment). The register is essentially a register of recommendations, annotated with details of the issue of the medals. Where no gratuity accompanied the medal, the entry is marked 'W. G.' (without gratuity); where, for one reason or another, the medal was not issued, the entry is marked 'N. S.' (not sanctioned) and struck through. The regiment was based on the 20th Regimental District - Bury. The 1st battalion returned from Malta to Ireland in January 1881, and by 1885 was serving at Fermoy; in September of that year it was moved to England; in February 1889 to Scotland; in April 1891 to Ireland and in 1895 was stationed at the Curragh. Returning to England in 1897, it was dispatched to Crete in 1901, and from there to Malta. The 2nd battalion embarked from Ireland for Bombay in 1881, and in 1885 was at Mhow, and in 1895 at Quetta. It was transferred to the Soudan in 1898, taking part in the battle of Khartoum (gaining the regimental honour "Khartoum"), before being transferred to Crete and Malta. In 1899 the 2nd battalion was moved to South Africa, where it added "South Africa, 1899-1902" and "Relief of Kimberley" to the colours.GIDDINS. Cost: £8.00. | Sample scan, click to enlarge

The 2nd battalion embarked for Bermuda in 1880, and moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1883; in 1886 to Gibraltar, in 1887 on to Egypt; in 1891 to Malta; and in 1894 to India.
