| London funerals and other news
(1550-1563)
Henry Machyn was a citizen and merchant-taylor of London. He had a professional interest in the lavish funerals of his fellow citizens, and in October 1550 started a note book giving brief details of these occasions. Soon he added political news, and (in an age before newspapers) he had a journalist's eye for accidents, hangings, the preachings and suppression of heretics, and the fortunes and misfortunes of dissidents. He lived in interesting times; the early death of Edward VI; the failed attempt to install Jane on the throne; the succession of queen Mary, and a lurch towards Catholicism; her marriage to Philip of Spain; her death, and the accession of queen Elizabeth. Machyn's humble journal, written for his own amusement and with a resolute indifference to orthography, became in its time an important historical source, used by Strype, and then edited by John Gough Nichols for the Camden Society and published in 1848.FAWKENER. A muster of the ablemen, gunners, light horsemen, pikemen, archers and billmen available from this hundred, compiled by sir Hugh Paulet, sir Maurice Barkeley, sir Ralph Hopton and John Horner in answer to a royal commission of the 11th year of queen Elizabeth. The returns are arranged by tithing. The hundred consisted of the parishes of Camerton, Comb Hay, Corston, Dunkerton, Englishcombe, Farleigh Hungerford, Forscote (Foxcote), Hinton Charterhouse, Newton St Loe, Norton St Philip, Tellisford (Telsford). | Aliens in London (1571)
'The Reporte of the Searche of all the Straungers wythin London and Southwerk and the Liberties therof, made the xth daye of November, 1571'. The search found a total of 4,631 aliens living in the city, the great majority (3,643) being Dutch, 657 Frenchmen, 233 Italians &c. Arranged by parish and ward the report lists each householder by full name, where born, whether a denizen, (often) additional details, and how many aliens were in the household, and religion. This index includes also persons mentioned incidentally, such as employers. SP 12/82. Where there is a pair of scans for a single entry, the first gives the heading for the ward or parish.

| Knaresborough testators, legatees and witnesses
(1510-1606)
Knaresborough in the West Riding of Yorkshire lay in the ancient diocese of York, but was part of a large separate probate jurisdiction or peculiar encompassing the parishes of Burton Leonard, Farnham cum Scotton, Fewston, Great Ouseburn, Hampsthwaite, Knaresborough, South Stainley, Staveley, and some small adjoining areas. Grants of probate and administration, as well as copies of wills, were recorded on the Knaresborough court rolls. Dr Francis Collins prepared abstracts of all enrolled wills, grants of administration, and of tuition, from the 2nd year of the reign of king Henry VIII to the 3rd and 4th of James I, 'no matter how insignificant in life the testator may have been or how uninteresting the will', and these were published by the Surtees Society in 1902.FAWKENER. | Compositions for Knighthood in Sussex: Lewes rape
(1630)
King Charles I 28 January 1630 issued a commission to sit in London and treat with all his subjects who would compound for their fines for not taking up knighthood (a responsibility incumbent on all men of full age having £40 or more a year in land) and for non-attendance to receive their knighthood at his coronation. The returns from the commissioners for Sussex, preserved in the Public Record Office, were edited by sir Henry Ellis and published in 1864. The returns are arranged by rape, the collectors giving the full name of each person paying their composition (usually £10): but more detail is supplied under the returns from the special commission that then certified those persons who had not appeared, refused to pay or excused themselves as being under age or of insufficient means &c. 'notwithstanding they are fitt and able men'. The returns from the special commission specify either the hundred (within the rape) or the parish of residence.FAWKENER.
