(1800) Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's name, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. The indentures themselves can date from a year or two earlier than this return. (1837) The return of the railway subscription contracts deposited in the Private Bill Office lists the shareholders in the Birmingham, Bristol & Thames Junction Railway, subscribers to 2,781 shares amounting to £55,620 towards the £105,000 estimated expense of the project. (1838) The provincial banks of England and Wales made annual returns to the Stamp Office of their proprietors or shareholders. These returns, registered in March 1838, from the 103 banks then in existence, contain the full names and addresses of about 30,000 shareholders. This bank had branches at Manchester, Preston, Burnley, Birmingham, Chester, Leek, Burslem, Liverpool, Blackburn, Ashbourne, Rochdale, Shrewsbury, Ellesmere, Uttoxeter, Whitchurch, Newport and Ludlow.ELLERAY. | Railway Subscription Contracts
(1845) £21,386,703 6s 4d was promised by about 10,000 subscribers of less than £2,000 per contract to the nearly 200 railway bills deposited in the Private Bill Office during the Session of Parliament for 1845. This alphabetical list gives the full names of the subscribers (surname first), description (i. e., occupation), place of abode, a numerical reference to the title of the railway, the amount subscribed to each, and total. (1760-1846) Joseph Romilly, registrar of the university of Cambridge, compiled Graduati Cantabrigienses, a catalogue of graduates from the academic year of admissions 1760 through to 10 October 1846. The names are arranged alphabetically by surname, and then chronologically by christian name: the college is given, with an asterisk in those cases where the man became a fellow, and then, in chronological order, his degrees.
