Citizens of London: Haberdashers (1724) A list of the persons who polled for Charles Goodfellow esquire at the late election for a member of parliament to represent the city of London, held 23rd to 28th November 1724. Full names are given, surname first, arranged by the livery companies to which the citizens belonged. This list was published in The Daily Post and elsewhere: 'Gentlemen, we desire you will carefully examine the following list of polsters, and in case you find yourselves or friends polled by others, or any polled who are dead or absent, or who have no right, that you'll give immediate notice thereof at Salter's Hall in Swithin's Lane, where attendance will be daily given from 8 a-clock in the morning till 9 a-clock at night. It is not doubted but the endeavours to obtain a law to secure your invaded rights and privileges will be soon successful, this should now excite you to a diligent search after false pollers, which will in all probability make the majority greater for sir Richard Hopkins. N.B. The scrutineers so far as they have proceeded, do find a much greater number of false pollers for Mr Goodfellow, than for sir Richard Hopkins.' EGGERTON. Cost: £6.00. Masters of apprentices registered in Somerset (1768) Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's name, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. The indentures themselves can date from a year or two earlier than this return. (The sample entry shown on this scan is taken from a Salop return. Soldiers of the 1st battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment, fighting in Egypt (1882) The war medal roll for the Egyptian campaign of 1882 is annotated to show those men actually present at Tel-el-Kebir, and thereby also entitled to the Tel-el-Kebir clasp. In addition, there follows an almost duplicate roll of men entitled to the Bronze Star granted by the Khedive of Egypt in recognition of the campaign. The 1st battalion, The South Staffordshire Regiment embarked from Ireland to Malta in 1880, and was transferred to Egypt for the 1882 campaign. The battalion was moved back to Malta in 1883, but had to return to Egypt and the Soudan for further fighting in 1884; to Gibraltar in 1886, but back to Egypt in 1891, only returning to England in 1893. However, this roll, which was compiled at Camp Abbasiyeh near Cairo in November 1882, relates only to the 1882 campaign. EGGERTON. Cost: £8.00.	Sample scan, click to enlarge
Workers from the City of Birmingham Gas Department who fought in the Great War (1919) The Roll of Honour for the department lists the men who joined his Majesty's forces, giving for each his surname, and christian name or initials. The names are arranged by works - Windsor Street, Nechells, Council House and Wednesbury, Saltley, Distribution, Central Laboratory, Test Works and Laboratories, Adderley Street, and Swan Village. Inhabitants of Liverpool (1955) Kelly's (Gore's) Directory of Liverpool and District includes this alphabetical list of residents and traders, with names, addresses, and (where applicable) telephone numbers. Covering a large area around Liverpool, the directory includes Bootle, Birkenhead and Wallasey, and thus the populous areas of southwest Lancashire and of the Wirral peninsula of Cheshire. EGGERTON.
