The register of bishop Richard de Swinfield of Hereford, containing general diocesan business. Hereford diocese covered almost all Herefordshire, southern rural Shropshire, a westward arm of Worcestershire, and a northwestern slice of Gloucestershire. | Inhabitants of Leicester

The Corporation of Leicester commissioned the publication (in 1899) of extracts from the earliest borough archives, edited by Mary Bateson. This volume brings together several important sources: the borough charters; the merchant gild rolls (from 1196 onwards); tax returns; court rolls (from about 1260 onwards); mayoral accounts, &c. All the Latin and French texts are accompanied by English translations. Membership of the merchant gild was by right of inheritance (s. p. = sede patris, in his father's seat), or by payment of a fee called a 'bull' (taurus). The sample scan shows part of a gild entrance roll; those marked * paid their bull, and were thus, by implication, not natives, or at least not belonging to gild merchant families. By 1400 membership of the gild merchant had become the equivalent of gaining freedom of the borough (being a free burgess): but at this period the two were not necessarily the same, and some of the merchant gild members were not resident in the borough, merely traded there. Not all the tax rolls surviving for this period are printed: but full lists of names are given for a loan for redemption of pontage and gavelpence of 1252-3 (pp. 44-46); five tallages of 1269 to 1271 brought together in a single table (128-145); and tallages of 1286 (208-211), 1307 (255-257), 1311 (272-274) and 1318 (310-313). The portmanmoot (or portmote) was the borough court dealing with minor infractions and civil suits. Finally, there is a calendar of charters (from c.1232 onwards, 381-400), and a list of mayors, bailiffs (reeves), receivers and serjeants (401-407).

This calendar of the deeds enrolled from 1307 to 1341 was compiled for the corporation by Edith Crosse (MacKinnon), indexed by Walter Rye, and published by the Norfolk and Norwich Archaeological Society in 1915. They are set out chronologically, translated from the original Latin into English, giving the name and occupation of grantor and grantee, and naming the parish in which the property lay. King Edward VI died 6 July 1553 and was buried 8 August following. The accounts of the funeral expenses were prepared by sir Edward Waldegrave, knight, one of queen Mary's privy coucil, and master of her Majesty's great wardrobe. The expenses included the purchase of 'blacke clothe boughte for the buriall' to furnish mourning for every officer and servant of the late king's household, and these accounts list all the officers, department by department, by name. Most officers were provided with 4 yards of cloth, and their clerks and servants 3 yards each: greater dignitaries were allowed from 7 to 16 yards; sir Edward himself received 10. | South Malling Peculiar Will Calendar
(1560-1567)
R. Garraway Price published in 1907 this calendar of a volume of wills from the peculiar probate jurisdiction of the Archbishop of Canterbury's exempt deanery of South Malling, which covered these parishes in Lewes and Pevensey rapes of Sussex: Edburton, Lindfield, Buxted, Framfield, Isfield, Isfield, Uckfield, Mayfield, Wadhurst, Glynde, Ringmer, St Thomas at Cliffe, South Malling and Stanmer. His introduction states: "Among the Will Register Books still at the Chichester Probate Registry is one lettered on the back 'ARCHBISHOP’S PECULIARS, WILLS, 1560 TO 1567, VOL. II.' It contains, as stated on the outside, Wills proved in a Peculiar of the Archbishop, and also some Grants of Administration, but instead of being those of persons who died within the jurisdiction of the Peculiars of Pagham and Tarring in West Sussex, they are the Wills, and, with one exception hereinafter mentioned, also the Administrations, of persons who died within the jurisdiction of the Peculiar of the Deanery of South Malling in East Sussex. The Register contains 162 wills and administrations. The earliest of the latter is dated 4 March, 1560-1. Of the 162 records, 117 are wills and 45 administrations. On the inside of the first cover is written in pencil 'This book contains wills proved in the Deanery of Southmalling, being a Peculiar of Canterbury, between 1560 and April, 1567. The wills are pretty regularly entered to the 17th of March, 1564 (fo. 67). No wills appear to have been proved from that time to the 16th July, 1565, a period of 4 months. The grants of Admon. commence at fo. 28n, and from there to the end are occasionally to be met with, but I doubt if they are regularly entered, judging from the fewness of the entries.' Garraway Price furnished each name with the parish and occupation (if stated in the will), date of the will, date of probate, and folio number within the register.EASTON. | Aliens in London (1571)
'The Reporte of the Searche of all the Straungers wythin London and Southwerk and the Liberties therof, made the xth daye of November, 1571'. The search found a total of 4,631 aliens living in the city, the great majority (3,643) being Dutch, 657 Frenchmen, 233 Italians &c. Arranged by parish and ward the report lists each householder by full name, where born, whether a denizen, (often) additional details, and how many aliens were in the household, and religion. This index includes also persons mentioned incidentally, such as employers. SP 12/82. Where there is a pair of scans for a single entry, the first gives the heading for the ward or parish.
