William Paver, a 19th-century Yorkshire genealogist, made brief abstracts of early marriage licences (now lost) in York Registry. His manuscript, which became Additional Manuscripts 29667 in the British Museum, was transcribed by J. W. Clay, F. S. A., and printed in various issues of the Yorkshire Archaeological Journal: this is from the volume for 1903. Paver did not note the dates of the licences, merely listing them by year: his abstracts give the names and addresses of both parties, and the name of the parish church in which it was intended that the wedding would take place.DREW. | Compositions for Knighthood in Sussex: Pevensey rape
(1630)
King Charles I 28 January 1630 issued a commission to sit in London and treat with all his subjects who would compound for their fines for not taking up knighthood (a responsibility incumbent on all men of full age having £40 or more a year in land) and for non-attendance to receive their knighthood at his coronation. The returns from the commissioners for Sussex, preserved in the Public Record Office, were edited by sir Henry Ellis and published in 1864. The returns are arranged by rape, the collectors giving the full name of each person paying their composition (usually £10): but more detail is supplied under the returns from the special commission that then certified those persons who had not appeared, refused to pay or excused themselves as being under age or of insufficient means &c. 'notwithstanding they are fitt and able men'. The returns from the special commission specify either the hundred (within the rape) or the parish of residence.DREW. The Prerogative Court of Canterbury's main jurisdiction was central and southern England and Wales, as well as over sailors &c dying abroad: these brief abstracts, compiled under the title "Year Books of Probates", and printed in 1902, usually give address, date of probate and name of executor or administrator. They are based on the Probate Act Books, cross-checked with the original wills, from which additional details are, occasionally, added. | English passengers to New England

Samuel G. Drake searched British archives from 1858 to 1860 for lists of passengers sent from England to New England, publishing the results in 1860 in Boston, Massachusetts. Adult emigrants transported to New England in the period 1632 to 1637 had to take oaths of allegiance and religious conformity, certified by parish priest, mayor or justices, and these certificates form the core of this book, but it also includes a list of 'Scotch Prisoners sent to Massachusetts in 1652, by Order of the English Government', and various other passenger lists and documents, dating as late as 1671. The Reverend E. H. Bates Harbin prepared extracts from the Somerset quarter session records of 1625 to 1639 for publication by the Somerset Record Society (xxiv) in 1908. The period is covered by quarter sessions minute book 2 (part) and 3; these are based on the rolls of recognizances; criminal indictments; and the sessions rolls (which also supplied a hiatus in book 2 for most of 1627). | Wiltshire freeholders

Inquisitions post mortem were held after the death of freeholders who held their estates in capite or in chief, i. e., directly from the crown. The inquisition, held by the royal escheator upon the oath of jurors from the county who were also normally freeholders, recorded what estates the deceased had held, by what tenure, what they were worth, the date of death, who was the next heir, and whether the heir was of age.
