Outstanding soldiers of The Prince Albert's (Somerset Light Infantry)
(1881-1901)
Each year the best soldiers of the regiment were chosen for long service and good conduct medals. This register gives rank, name, regimental number, and date of recommendation. (The sample scan is from the East Surrey regiment). The register is essentially a register of recommendations, annotated with details of the issue of the medals. Where no gratuity accompanied the medal, the entry is marked 'W. G.' (without gratuity); where, for one reason or another, the medal was not issued, the entry is marked 'N. S.' (not sanctioned) and struck through. The regiment was based on the 13th Regimental District - Taunton. The 1st battalion returned from South Africa in 1879, and by 1885 was based at Enniskillen. It embarked for Gibraltar 12 November 1891, going on to India in 1893, where it was at Umballa in Bengal by 1895. The 2nd battalion embarked for India (via Malta) 27 July 1877, moving on to Burma in 1883, and in 1885 was stationed at Rangoon ("Burma, 1885-1887"); it returned to India in 1887 and to England in 1894. In 1895 it was at Devonport. The battalion was sent out to South Africa in 1899, and added "South Africa, 1899-1902" and "Relief of Ladysmith" to the regimental honours.DINSDALE. | Carpenters Excluded from their Union: Manchester (1907)
The 48th annual report of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners, from December 1906 to December 1907, gives lists of members excluded from the union: the great majority for arrears of membership fees, but some for 'non-payment of entrance money'; 'for working contrary to the society's interest'; 'false declaration of entry'; 'imposing on the society's funds'; 'withholding the funds of the society'; 'violating rule while on sick benefit'; 'bringing the society into discredit'; and 'members who have paid up and resigned'.

| Soldiers wounded in the Great War: Manchester Regiment
(1916)
Lists of names of soldiers wounded, died of wounds, died, missing presumed dead, and taken prisoner by the enemy, were issued to the British national press under the title Roll of Honour. Each man is identified by surname, initials and number. The regimental returns from which the daily Roll was compiled were made up over the previous week or weeks. Each regimental return may be partial, covering only part of the alphabet. The lists are provisional, in that a man reported wounded one day may appear as died of wounds later; a missing presumed dead may later be reported as having been found, or as having died; the lists of prisoners of war were provided by the enemy and will relate to captures weeks earlier. However, these rolls are the most comprehensive single source of names of British and allied combatants meeting with misfortune in the Great War. This is the roll published 4 August 1916. DINSDALE. (1914-1918)
The London County Council published a 'Record of Service in the Great War 1914-1918 by Members of the Council's Staff' in 1922. This included a complete list, department by department, of the over 7000 staff who had served in the armed forces during the war, those dying while on active service being marked with an asterisk. The entries give full name, surname first, in bold, the years in uniform, any decorations, rank, and a brief description of theatre in which engaged. DINSDALE. The Home Office issued monthly lists of aliens to whom Certificates of Naturalization or Readmission to British Nationality had been granted by the Secretary of State and whose oaths of allegiance had been registered in the Home Office. These notices, from January to December 1920, refer to naturalizations from December 1919 to November 1920. The lists give full name, surname first; country of origin; date of taking the oath of allegiance; place of residence; and occupation. A dagger indicates re-admission to British nationality.DINSDALE. | Convicts released from prison on licence wanted by the police
(1923)
The Police Gazette was published by Authority by the London Metropolitan Police, and circulated, as confidential, to the police forces throughout Britain and Ireland. The contents were based on the information routinely submitted to the Criminal Record Office. One of the regular features was a section entitled 'Convicts on Licence, Persons under Police Supervision and others whose apprehensions are sought for failing to comply with the requirements of the Prevention of Crimes Act'. The details given are: the convict's full name (in bold), with any aliases; C. R. O. number, year of birth, height, complexion, hair colour, eye colour, distinguishing marks such as scars; occupation; birthplace. There then follows a resume of the previous conviction and details of release; reason for revocation of the licence (usually failure to report to the police); name of the officer proving service of the notice; name of the officer proving identity; previous convictions; names of police forces that had had contact with the indivudual in the past. Often there is a police portrait. Variations of surname spelling and aliases are noted in the descriptions, and these variants and aliases have also been indexed.
