Cheshire gentry and their ancestors
(1580-1613)
Richard St George, Norroy King of Arms, and Henry St George, Bluemaster Pursuivant of Arms, of the College of Arms, conducted a heraldic visitation of Cheshire in 1612 and 1613, recording pedigrees of gentlemen claiming the right to bear coats of arms. A copy of their visitation was elaborated by the addition of other Cheshire pedigrees in Harleian Manuscript 1535: and this manuscript was edited by sir George J. Armytage and John Paul Rylands for publication by the Harleian Society in 1909. It has a large number of pedigrees of Cheshire gentry, with a few brief abstracts from early documents; and the pedigrees of some offshoots from old Cheshire stocks which had taken root in other counties. The pedigrees largely relate to the period back from 1613 to the previous visitation of 1580, but there is also some older material, particularly back into the 15th century. In most cases each pedigree is prefixed by a heraldic description of the coat of arms. The printed volume also includes (pages 1 to 4) a list of Cheshire men who disclaimed the right to bear a coat of arms at the 1613 visitation, taken from Harleian Manuscript 1070.CLUDD. Armigerous families in Shropshire
(1623)
A heraldic visitation of Shropshire was taken in 1623 by Robert Tresswel, Somerset Herald, and Augustine Vincent, Rouge Croix Pursuivant of Arms, marshals and deputies to William Camden, Clarenceux King of Arms. At this visitation, county families claiming the right to bear coats of arms registered these together with their pedigrees, often stretching back through many generations. A copy of the visitation (Harleian MS 1396) was edited by George Grazebrook and John Paul Rylands, with additions from pedigrees of Shropshire gentry taken by the heralds in 1563 and 1584, and other sources, and published by the Harleian Society in 1889. Additions from Harleian MS 1241 are shown in italics; from Harleian MS 615 in italics within parentheses; and from a copy of the 1623 visitation in Shrewsbury School library, in italics within square brackets.CLUDD. Purchasers of Bishops' Lands: Nottinghamshire
(1647-1651)
16 November 1646 Parliament ordained the sale of all the lands and estates of the bishops and archbishops for the service of the Commonwealth. This account, printed in 1834, is a transcript from a manuscript presented to the British Museum by William Bray (Add. 9049). It gives in tabular form the details of the conveyances of the lands to private individuals, showing the name of the bishopric; the date of the conveyance; county; description of the lands; purchaser; and purchase money. A total of over £624,158 was raised: after the restoration of the monarchy these estates were returned to the Church, with compensation.CLUDD. Cost: £6.00. | Sample scan, click to enlarge

Promoters of New England

The Record Book of Meetings of the Corporation for the Propagation of the Gospel in New England (generally known as the New England Company) from 1656 to 1686 was edited by George Parker Winship for the Prince Society and published in 1920. The promoters of the venture were largely merchants of the city of London and their relatives, and as much of these minutes refers to the society's property around London as to the comings and goings of adventurers.CLUDD.
