The Phonetic Journal, published weekly, contains English texts rendered phonetically, and news about the promotion of phonetic reform and phonography. The section entitled Intelligence included lists of new members of the Phonetic Society, alterations (such as changes of address), and lists of contributions to the Phonetic Fund. The lists of new members give full name (surname first) and address, preceded by a number indicating the class or grade achieved in their phonetic studies. In the tables of contributions, full names and addresses are only given for the major donors; the mass of small contributors are listed by surname and initials.CHAPMAN. Crystal Palace Company Shareholders

The management of the Crystal Palace, built for the Great Exhibition of 1851, was restructured by a Deed of Settlement in 1852, and then incorporated as the Crystal Palace Company by royal charter in January 1853. Gentry in London
(1856)
The Post Office London Directory for 1856 includes this 'Court Directory', listing alphabetically by surname and christian name the upper class residents of the capital with their postal addresses. 'In order to afford space for the addresses, the abbreviation "esq." for esquire has no longer been appended to each name in the Court Directory. It should be understood that such should be added to the name of every gentleman in the following pages to which no inconsistent addition is affixed.' Decorations, honours &c. are generally given. Some gentlemen appear who are also listed (as professional men, &c.) in the commercial section. Those with second residences in the provinces usually have the country address given as well.CHAPMAN. Mathematics students at Cambridge University

Tripos lists or examination results for the year, arranged by class (Wranglers, Senior Optimes and Junior Optimes), and within each class in order of score in the examination (the names of candidates with equal scores are bracketed together, with the word 'AEq.'). Each student's surname and college is given: this list was printed in 1890, and was annotated with asterisks to show which students had subsequently become fellows of the university; and with footnotes showing those who became headmasters, &c., elsewhere. Winners of Dr Smith's Mathematical Prizes are marked (1) senior, (2) for junior. The Greek letter alpha is affixed to the names of those students who had gained first class results in the Classical Tripos; beta to those entered in the second class; and gamma to those entered in the third class. These lists are particularly useful in identifying for an individual the fellow-students who will have attended lectures with him; and, where from the college, are likely to have been even more closely associated by having been under the same supervisor. Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain: Country Members

The membership list of the Pharmaceutical Society was divided into London Members; Country Members; Foreign Life Members; Associates admitted before 1 July 1842; Associates who have passed the Major Examination; and Associates who have passed the Minor Examination. In each case the lists give year of admission; number of certificate (where appropriate); name (surname first, christian name and initials); and address (house number and street name in London, merely town of residence elsewhere). An asterisk before the surname indicates a life member (except in the list of Foreign Life Members). There is also a list of registered apprentices: in this list we have year of registration, full name (surname first); master's name (in the form 'residing with Mr. Smith') and town.CHAPMAN.
