Essex Freeholders: Rochford and Thurstable hundreds

The poll of the freeholders of Essex at the election of a knight of the shire to serve in Parliament, taken at Chelmsford 31 January 1810 and fourteen following days (Sundays excepted). The candidates were John Archer Houblon esquire and Montagu Burgoyne esquire. This poll book gives the names of the voters arranged by initial letter of surname division by division. The freeholders' full names are stated, surname first, residence (often elsewhere), and place where the freehold lay. The right hand column records their votes. The qualification for suffrage in the counties was the possession of a freehold estate worth more than 40s a year. The electoral divisions comprised these hundreds: I. Barstable and Chafford; II. Becontree and Waltham; III. Chelmsford; IV. Hinckford; V. Tendring; VI. Uttleford, Clavering and Dunmow; VII. Harlow, Ongar and Freshwell; VIII. Lexden, Colchester and Witham; IX. Rochford and Thurstable; X. Dengie and Winstree.

Tripos lists or examination results for the year, arranged by class (First, Second and Third), and within each class in order of score in the examination (students getting exactly equal marks are bracketed together with the note 'AEq.'). Each student's surname and college is given: this list was printed in 1890, and was annotated with asterisks to show which students had subsequently become fellows of the university; and with footnotes showing those who became headmasters, &c., elsewhere. In each year two students were singled out for the Chancellor's Medals, and these are marked, (A) for senior, (B) for junior (or with a paragraph mark if adjudged of equal merit). At this period candidates for Honours in Classics were required to have obtained Honours in Mathematics: holders of Dr Smith's Mathematical Prizes, where they occur, are marked (1) for senior, and (2) for junior. These lists are particularly useful in identifying for an individual the fellow-students who will have attended lectures with him; and, where from the college, are likely to have been even more closely associated by having been under the same supervisor. The Greek letter alpha is affixed to the names of those students who had gained first class results in the Classical Tripos; beta to those entered in the second class; and gamma to those entered in the third class. The poll on the election of three knights of the shire to serve in Parliament for the county of Cambridge, was taken at Cambridge, Royston, Newmarket, Ely, Wisbech and Whittlesea 18 and 19 December 1832. The candidates were Henry John Adeane esquire, Richard Greaves Townley esquire, Charles Philip Yorke esquire and John Walbanke Childers esquire. This poll book sets out the names of the voters in alphabetical order hundred by hundred and parish by parish. The voters' full names are stated, surname first. The right hand column records their votes. The new qualification for suffrage in the counties, after the passage of the 1832 Great Reform Bill, was the possession of a freehold estate worth 40s a year or more, a copyhold or long leasehold of £10 a year or more, or a tenancy or short leasehold of £50 a year or more.

The Eastern Division included the hundreds of Blofield, Clavering, Depwade, Diss, Earsham, North Erpingham, South Erpingham, Eynsford, East Flegg, West Flegg, Forehoe, Happing, Henstead, Humbleyard, Loddon, Taverham, Tunstead and Walsham. The franchise was available to freeholders worth 40s a year or over; copyholders and long leaseholders of £10 or more; short leaseholders and tenants of £50 or more: but limited to adult males. Voting took place on 20 and 21 December 1832. This poll book lists the voters for each parish, with the votes cast. Voting was not compulsory, and non-voters are not listed. A poll to elect knights of the shire to represent the Western Division of the county of Kent in parliament was held in 1835, the candidates being Thomas Law Hodges (H), Thomas Rider (R) and sir William R. P. Geary (G). The poll started on January 19th; Rider withdrawing his name on that first day, the poll was closed prematurely, many electors not yet having voted. This poll book lists all the electors, whether they voted or not; the county franchise included not only male freeholders of 40s a year, but also £10 copyholders and long-leaseholders, and £50 short-leaseholders and tenants. For each elector the full name is given (surname first) and residence (often not the place for which qualified to vote). Votes are indicated by dashes in the right-hand columns. BORRETT.
