The Mercantile Navy List and Annual Appendage to the Commercial Code of Signals for All Nations, edited by J. H. Brown, was published By Authority in 1857. It includes this list of Pilotage Certificates of Service. It gives masters of passenger-carrying vessels licensed by the Board of Trade to act as pilots themselves in certain stretches of water. The table gives the full name of the master; draft of water of the vessel; owner; and the limits to which his pilotage certificate extends. Dissolutions of partnerships in England and Wales

Perry's Bankrupt and Insolvent Gazette, issued monthly, included lists of dissolutions of partnerships gazetted in England and Wales. The names of the partners are given in full, surnames in capitals, followed by trade and address, and date of the end of the partnership. Each entry usually ends with the phrase 'Debts by ...', indicating which partner intended to continue, and resume the responsibilities of, the business. Members of the Sussex Archaeological Society

"We may fairly ascribe the origin of the Society to the discovery, in the autumn of 1845, of the remains of Gundrada and De Warenne at Lewes Priory. That remarkable exhumation of the illustrious and long-buried dead, excited a deep and long-sustained interest, not only in the history of those noble personages, but also in the annals of the monastery they had founded, and in many cognate but hitherto much-neglected matters of research." By 1858 the membership had risen to about 550, and the tenth volume of Sussex Archaeological Collections had been published. Scottish Bankrupts

Perry's Bankrupt and Insolvent Gazette, issued monthly, included lists of sequestrations of Scottish bankrupts' estates. The initial entry gives the name of the bankrupt (surname first, in capitals), trade and address; the dates and place of the stages of the sequestration process, and the date by which claims against the estate were to be lodged. This is the index to the names of the bankrupts, from the issues from January to December 1858: it also covers dissolutions of partnerships in Scotland, and the names of trustees, assignees, attorneys &c. mentioned in these Scottish cases.BARCLAY. Civil Service Certificates
(1859)
The Civil Service Commission published this annual list of all persons who had obtained certificates of qualification for appointment in the various public departments. The list gives full name (surname first); department (such as Post Office, or Inland Revenue); situation (such as Letter-carrier, or Clerk); and date of certificate. Candidates whose names are preceded by a dagger obtained appointments as the result of competition. A double dagger shows those who obtained their appointments as the result of open competition. Those whose names are preceded by an asterisk obtained honorary additions to their certificates either for proficiency in extra subjects chosen by themselves, or for marked proficiency in the prescribed subjects.

Trainee Schoolmasters at Edinburgh (Free Church)

The Education Department set examinations of trainee teachers at the various training colleges in Britain. This is the class list of the men who took examinations at the Teacher Training College at Christmas 1859. The names are given for the second year first, arranged by division in the examination (in order of merit for the first and second divisions), and then for the students of the first year, arranged similarly. Full names are given (with initials for middle names). The letter (D.) indicates that the candidate had obtained a certificate of competency as a teacher of drawing. An asterisk signifies that the candidate had received a prize for proficiency in drawing. The sample scan is from an Edinburgh list of trainee schoolmistresses.BARCLAY.
