The regiment was moved from the West Indies to Bermuda in 1875; to Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1876; on to Gibraltar in 1880; and off to South Africa in 1881.

The regiment was based in India throughout this period, moving into Afghanistan during 1878 to 1880, and taking part in the battles of Charasiah and Candahar.
