Masters of apprentices registered at Oxford (1759) Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's name, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. The indentures themselves can date from a year or two earlier than this return. (The sample entry shown on this scan is taken from a Bristol return. Burton-upon-Trent Directory (1818) The Staffordshire General and Commercial Directory was published by W. Parson and T. Bradshaw in 1818 in sections, 8 to 19 relating to towns in the centre of the county: 8. Abbots Bromley; 9. Burton-upon-Trent; 10. Cheadle; 11. Eccleshall; 12. Lichfield; 13. Longnor; 14. Penkridge; 15. Rugeley; 16. Stafford; 17. Stone; 18. Tamworth; 19. Uttoxeter. In each section the traders are listed alphabetically under surname, with occupation and address. ASKE. Cost: £4.00. Dissolutions of partnerships in England and Wales (1846) Perry's Bankrupt and Insolvent Gazette, issued monthly, included lists of dissolutions of partnerships gazetted in England and Wales. The names of the partners are given in full, surnames in capitals, followed by trade and address, and date of the end of the partnership. Each entry usually ends with the phrase 'Debts by ...', indicating which partner intended to continue, and resume the responsibilities of, the business. Inhabitants of Southwark in Surrey (1851) The 1851 census return for St George the Martyr, Southwark, registration district: London Road sub-district: enumeration district 15: described as: "Webber Street commencing at Wood's (corner of Webber Row) to Ross's the end of Parish - Barron's Place (both sides) - John's Buildings - Herbert's Buildings - Chester Place - Barron's Court - Laurie Terrace - Barkham Terrace - King Edward Street (both sides) - and Yorkshire School." This area lay in the parish of St George the Martyr, Southwark. The addresses listed in the actual returns are 1 to 6 and 20 Webber Street, 1 to 28 Herbert's Buildings, Half Way House, 1 to 7 Johns Terrace, 1 to 20 Barrons Place, 1 to 8 Johns Buildings, 1 to 5 Chester Place, 1 to 6 Barron's Court, 1 to 23 Laurie Terrace, 1 to 17 Barkham Terrace (with East Lodge and West Lodge), 1 to 11 King Edward Street, 1 to 16 Price's Terrace, and the Yorkshire Society's School (Westminster Road). Shropshire Light Infantry fighting in Egypt (1882) The war medal roll for the Egyptian campaign of 1882 is annotated to show those men actually present at Tel-el-Kebir, and thereby also entitled to the Tel-el-Kebir clasp. In addition, there follows an almost duplicate roll of men entitled to the Bronze Star granted by the Khedive of Egypt in recognition of the campaign. The 1st battalion, The King's (Shropshire Light Infantry), left England for Egypt in 1882, and took part in this campaign before being sent on to Malta in 1883. The battalion returned for further duty in Egypt in 1885, but this roll, which compiled at Camp Abbasiyeh near Cairo in November 1882, refers only to the 1882 campaign. ASKE. Cost: £8.00. London Policemen (1878-1891) The Metropolitan Police Register of Joiners (MEPO 4/335) lists policemen joining the force 1 July 1878 to 31 December 1891 (warrant numbers 62845 to 77318). The register is alphabetical, in so far as the recruits are listed chronologically grouped under first letter of surname (I and J, and U and V being treated as single initials). It gives Date of Appointment, Name, Number of Warrant, Cause of Removal from Force (resigned, dismissed, promoted or died), and Date of Removal. ASKE. Cost: £8.00.	Sample scan, click to enlarge
Barristers (1918) The Law List for 1918 includes this 'List of Counsel, Special Pleaders, and Conveyancers at the Bar'. Each name is given in full, surname first; then the name of the Inn of Court as an abbreviation (G., Gray's Inn; I., Inner Temple; L., Lincoln's Inn; M., Middle Temple; and D. C. for Doctors' Commons) and date at which called to the bar. Barristers in practice are usually furnished with an address, and there are some abbreviated references to judicial awards and appointments.
