The diocese of Coventry and Lichfield at this period included the whole of Cheshire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire; all Lancashire south of the Ribble; northern Shropshire (including Shrewsbury); and northern Warwickshire (including Birmingham and Coventry). Ordinations took place on the four Ember Saturdays in the year, and on certain other occasions; lists of ordinands to the degrees of acolyte, subdeacon, deacon and priest were preserved in the ordination registers, a distinction being made between those clerks who were 'regular', i. e., monks, friars, &c., and those who were 'secular', the main body of the clergy. All ordinands were celibate, and those regular, and the secular who obtained benefices, remained so, but only a minority of the secular ordinands ever obtained benefices, and most will doubtless have married later in life. No man might be ordained to subdeacon or higher without proving either that he was of independent means or that he was sponsored by an institution or a gentleman. Most entries in the register of such ordinations therefore have the words 'ad titulum' followed by the name of the religious house that was the sponsor. This is an important indication of the man's origins - boys whose families were monastic tenants, and who were educated by the monks, would naturally be sponsored by the abbey. Only men who were born and bred in the diocese could be ordained by the bishop, unless producing letters dimissory from the bishop of the diocese of their birth. | Cambridgeshire Voters: Wisbech
(1832)
The poll on the election of three knights of the shire to serve in Parliament for the county of Cambridge, was taken at Cambridge, Royston, Newmarket, Ely, Wisbech and Whittlesea 18 and 19 December 1832. The candidates were Henry John Adeane esquire, Richard Greaves Townley esquire, Charles Philip Yorke esquire and John Walbanke Childers esquire. This poll book sets out the names of the voters in alphabetical order hundred by hundred and parish by parish. The voters' full names are stated, surname first. The right hand column records their votes. The new qualification for suffrage in the counties, after the passage of the 1832 Great Reform Bill, was the possession of a freehold estate worth 40s a year or more, a copyhold or long leasehold of £10 a year or more, or a tenancy or short leasehold of £50 a year or more.

| Metropolitan-Vickers Ex-Apprentices and Ex-Trainees

The third edition of 'A Register of Ex-Apprentices and Ex-Trainees of the Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Company Limited' was published in 1950. It contains 10,219 names of those who had been trained at Trafford Park, Manchester, between 1902 and the end of 1949. The compilation was based on the second edition (published in 1939) augmented by the answers to questionnaires, responded to by 74% of those included. Addresses for another 12% were updated. The entries are arranged alphabetically by surname (in capitals and bold) and forename. Then the period at Vickers (e. g., 46-48 for 1946 to 1948); year of birth; then highest career level within the company; and if removed to another company, the name of that (in bold) with year of joining. There are sections for any scholarship, war service, and present address, as of 1950. Names of the deceased are printed in italics.
In bold on the left hand side of each entry there is one or more of these abbreviations: C, College Apprentice; E, Special Trainee; k, Killed on Active Service, O. H. M. S.; Ls, Member, M-V.
