Owners of Merchantmen (1852-1853) Lloyd's Register of British and Foreign Shipping was issued annually, listing ships that had been surveyed preparatory to being insured. This is the register issued 1 July 1852 and then annotated as ships were re-surveyed through to 30 June 1853. The ships were numbered by the first letter of their name, and then by number alphabetically through the ships' names and within ships of the same name alphabetically by surname of the master. After the name of the ship there is the type of vessel (Bk, barque; Bg, brig; Bn, brigantine; Cr, cutter; Dr, dogger; G, galliott; H, hoy; K, ketch; Lr, lugger; Pol, polacre; S, ship; Sk, smack; Sp, sloop; Sr, schooner; St, schoot; Stm, steamer; Sw, snow; Yt, yacht), master's name (as at the time of the last survey); tonnage; place and year of build; owners; port belonging to; destined voyage; number of years first assigned; and character for hull and stores (e. g., A 1), with the year or month (e. g., 50 for 1850, or 2 for February 1852) of inspection. Underneath some entries details were given of construction and repair, with year - s., sheathed; d., doubled; C., coppered; I. B., iron bolts; c. f., copper fastened; M., sheathed with marine metal; Y. M., sheathed with yellow metal; G., sheathed with galvanised iron; Z., sheathed with zinc; F., felt; C. lm., coppered to light water or ballast mark; C. The third column, reserved for masters' names, is not particularly wide; with short surnames, an initial will be given; but longer surnames omit the initials, and even longer surnames are abbreviated. This is the index to owners in the main list. Often a ship would have changed hands by the time of re-survey, and the new owners' names are added in slightly smaller type under the original owners in the seventh column. These new owners are also included in this index. It should be borne in mind that the owners in the main list are those at the time of the respective previous survey for each ship, not necessarily as of 1 July 1852. WHITWILL. Cost: £6.00. Justices of the Peace, Bristol (1885) "Return giving the Names and Professions of all Justices of the Peace in the Boroughs and Cities of England and Wales, on the 1st day of June 1885, with the Dates of their Appointment; showing which were Non-resident, or had ceased for a Year or upwards to attend the Bench." Officers of the Royal Naval Reserve (1898) The Navy List, published by Authority, corrected to 18 December 1898, has this list of the officers on the Active List of the Royal Naval Reserve and of Honorary Officers of the reserve. Each officer's surname, christian name, and any middle initial(s) is given; with rank, and date of seniority in that rank. The ranks are: A E, Assistant Engineer; E, Engineer; Hon A P, Honorary Assistant Paymaster; Hon Ch E, Honorary Chief Engineer; Hon Cr, Honorary Commander; Hon L, Honorary Lieutenant; Hon P, Honorary Paymaster; Hon S L, Honorary Sub-Lieutenant; L, Lieutenant; Mid, Midshipman; S L, Sub-Lieutenant; Sen E, Senior Engineer. Boys entering Clifton College (1900) Clifton College near Bristol was established in 1862. This edition of the Clifton College Annals and Register for the Old Cliftonian Society by F. Borwick was published in 1925. Boys are listed alphabetically by term of entry, with full names, surname first, in bold. Father's (or widowed mother's) name is given (surname and initials) in capitals, and address. Then there is the name of the house (N. T., North Town; S. H., School House; S. T., South Town), first and last forms, distinctions in school work and games, and month of leaving. Anglican clergy (1930) Crockford's Clerical Directory listed all Anglican clergy in the British Isles, India, the colonies, Europe, Asia and South America. The 59th annual issue, for 1930, is based on returns from all the individuals listed. The details given are: name (surname first, in capitals) in bold, prefixed by an asterisk in the case of university electors, and by a dagger whether the return had not been made, or it had been imperfectly filled up; name of theological college and/or university, and degrees, with years; a bold d followed by year and diocese signifies date of ordination as deacon and by which bishop; then a bold p, similarly for ordination as priest; posts (C: curate; I: incumbent; V; vicar; R: rector) with parishes and years; address; telephone number; and lists of books &c. where appropriate. In the case of the man then holding an English, Irish, Scottish or Welsh benefice, additional details are given - a bold P signifies the patron of the advowson; then the income, with items such as Q. Members of Cambridge University (1935) The Cambridge University Calendar for 1935-1936 includes this list of all living members of the university, i. e. not only undergraduates and members of staff, but also all surviving graduates from earlier generations. The names are arranged alphabetically by surname, then by college in order of foundation, and under the particular colleges by order of seniority of the B. A. degree. Surnames are given, initials, name of college, and then the years of graduating B. A. and M. A. Where a change of name had occurred since matriculation, the original name is inserted in brackets. For undergraduates the term of matriculation is given in square brackets with an M for Michaelmas, L for Lent or E for Easter. An asterisk before a surname indicates a member of the Senate. Names which appeared on the roll of the Regent House promulgated in November 1934 are marked with a dagger. Shipping and Forwarding Agents: Bristol (1948) The Institute of Shipping and Forwarding Agents was incorporated under licence by the Board of Trade 19 December 1944. This third edition of the List of Members gives surnames, initials, and company address of practising members, and date of becoming Associate (A) or Fellow (F), arranged by the eight geographical branches - Bristol Channel; Humber District; Liverpool and District; London; Manchester and District; Scottish; Southampton and District; and Overseas. In addition, there are similar lists of Honorary Members and Non-Practising Members; and a list of 109 Student Members (those marked with an asterisk having passed the institute's examination).
