Masters of apprentices registered in Northumberland (1796) Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's name, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. The indentures themselves can date from a year or two earlier than this return. Freeholders voting in Coquetdale ward, Northumberland (1826) An election to choose two knights of the shire to represent Northumberland took place at Alnwick from 20 June to 6 July 1826. The candidates were Henry Thomas Liddell (L), Matthew Bell (B), Thomas Wentworth Beaumont (Bt) and Viscount Howick (H). The franchise included all freeholders of property worth 40 shillings or more per annum: each had two votes, but could plump for a single candidate. This poll book was published in 1827 and lists the voters from each ward: the freeholder's full name (surname first), residence, and the nature of the freehold (such as 'house at Corbridge'). The votes are shown in the right hand columns, with plumpers shown by a dagger. Coquetdale ward included Alnwick and Rothbury and the surrounding countryside, as well as Coquet Island. WHINHAM. Inhabitants of Southwark in Surrey (1851) The 1851 census return for St George the Martyr, Southwark, registration district: London Road sub-district: enumeration district 1: described as: "Bridge House Place, commencing at No 1 to the end - Borough Road (left hand) to the corner, Cuthbertson's - Southwark Bridge Road (left hand) to the house beyond Clark's Timber Yard - The opposite side of Southwark Bridge Road No 172 to Broom's Yard inclusive and both sides of Great Union Street from Southwark Bridge Road to Bridge House Place". This area lay in the parish of St George the Martyr, Southwark. The addresses listed in the actual returns are 1 to 52 Bridge House Place, 1 to 13 Borough Road (including Stones End, Portland Place and Atlas Works), 1 to 30 and 156 to 172 Southwark Bridge Road (including Brooms Yard), 1 to 19 Great Union Street. Bribed in Hull (1854) A Bill for the Prevention of Bribery in the Election of Members to serve in Parliament for the Borough of Kingston-upon-Hull, passed 11 April 1854, stated that a commission of inquiry 30 August 1853 had found that over a hundred voters were bribed at one or more of the elections for the borough in 1841, 1847 and 1852: the names of those bribed, and those who gave the bribes, were listed in the bill, and all those persons were disqualified from any future parliamentary elections for the borough.
