Suffolk householders (1674) Hearth tax was raised by assessing each householder on the number of chimneys to the dwelling. This provided a simple way to make a rough judgment as to the value of the dwelling: paupers were issued exemption certificates, but they too were listed at the end of each return. The returns were made by township, grouped by hundred. A complete copy of the hearth tax return for each shire was sent to the Exchequer: this is the return for Suffolk for Lady Day (25 March) 1674 (E 179/257/14) as printed in 1905 as Suffolk Green Book no xi, vol. 13. The numbers given are the numbers of hearths: where two or more people are grouped together with one number, it may be assumed that they were heads of separate households sharing a single building with that number of chimneys. Masters of Apprentices registered at Wells in Somerset (1710-1712) Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's father's name and address, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. May 1710 to January 1712. Apprentices registered in Somerset (1723-1726) Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's father's name and address, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. Because of the delay before some collectors made their returns, this register includes indentures and articles from as early as 1722. Officials and officers of the Admiralty, dockyards, and maritime institutions (1841) The Royal Kalendar lists officials and clerks of the Admiralty at Charing Cross, including those of the Admiralty Court; then there are the various civil departments of the Admiralty at Somerset Place: the Surveyor's Department, the Accountant-General's Department, Storekeeper-General's Department, Department of the Comptroller for Victualling and Transport Services; Department of the Physician-General; the Dockyards at Deptford, Woolwich, Chatham, Sheerness, Deal, Portsmouth, Plymouth, Pembroke, Halifax (Nova Scotia), Malta, Cape of Good Hope, Trincomalee and Bermuda; the Victualling Officers at the outports of Deptford, Portsmouth, Plymouth, Sheerness and Cork; the Royal Naval Hospitals at Haslar, Plymouth, Malta, Jamaica and Bermuda; the Royal Marines' Navy and Marine Agents in London; the Royal Hospital at Greenwich; Royal Hospital School; Corporation of the Trinity House; Corporation for Sick and Maimed Seamen in the Merchants Service; Royal Naval Benevolent Society; Naval Medical Supplemental Fund; Marine Society; London Maritime Institution; Royal National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck; and the Royal Naval School for Educating the Sons of the Less Affluent Naval and Marine Officers at the Least Possible Expense. Creditors and solicitors in England and Wales (1846) Perry's Bankrupt and Insolvent Gazette, issued monthly, included lists of bankruptcies and stages in the liquidation of the estate, payment of dividends, and discharge. The initial entry in this sequence gives the name of the bankrupt (surname first, in capitals), the date gazetted, address and trade (often with the phrase dlr. and ch., meaning dealer and chapman); the dates and times and courts of the official processes of surrender; the surname of the official commissioner (Com.); the surname of the official assignee; and the names and addresses of the solicitors; the date of the fiat; and whether on the bankrupt's own petition, or at the demand of petitioning creditors, whose names, trades and addresses are given. Traders and Professionals in Birmingham and Suburbs (1878) The Post Office Directory of Birmingham with its Suburbs, edited by E. R. Kelly, and published in 1878, has two main alphabetical lists - Court and Commercial. The suburbs included are Aston, Bickenhill Park, Birchfield End, Castle Bromwich, Erdington, Saltley (with Washwood Heath), Ward End (including Little Bromwich) and Witton, in Warwickshire; Handsworth (with Soho), Harborne, Perry Barr and Smethwick, in Staffordshire; and King's Heath, King's Norton, Moseley, Northfield, Selly Oak and Yardley (including Hall Green and Stechford) in Worcestershire. Soldiers of the 1st battalion, Berkshire Regiment, fighting in Egypt (1882) The war medal roll for the Egyptian campaign of 1882 is annotated to show those men actually present at Tel-el-Kebir, and thereby also entitled to the Tel-el-Kebir clasp. In addition, there follows an almost duplicate roll of men entitled to the Bronze Star granted by the Khedive of Egypt in recognition of the campaign. The 1st battalion, Princess Charlotte of Wales' (Berkshire Regiment) embarked for Gibraltar in 1881, was transferred to Malta at the start of 1882, and in July 1882 was shipped to Egypt, where the men remained until 1883. The battalion was then moved back to Gibraltar, but had to return to renewed fighting in Egypt and the Soudan in 1884.
