Clerks and Clergy in Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, and parts of Lancashire, Westmorland, and Northumberland (1215-1255) The register of archbishop Walter Gray of York, containing general diocesan business, mostly relating to clergy. The diocese of York at this period covered all of Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, as well as Lancashire north of the Ribble, southern Westmorland, and Hexhamshire in Northumberland. The register survives as two rolls (called the Major and the Minor), in all amounting to nearly 71 feet of parchment. It is thought that a third roll or more has been lost, because the acts of the archbishop for the last ten years of his episcopate are missing, as are all the ordination and ecclesiastical discipline records for his reign. The then unpublished parts of the register were edited for the Surtees Society by James Raine and printed in 1870, with some additional material included in appendices. SCHOT. Cost: £4.00. Grantees of offices, commissions and pardons (1272-1281) The Patent Rolls are the Chancery enrolments of royal letters patent. Those for the 1st to the 9th years of the reign of king Edward I (29 November 1272 to 17 November 1281) were edited for the Public Record Office by J. G. Black, and published in 1901. The main contents are royal commissions and grants; ratifications of ecclesiastical estates; writs of aid to royal servants and purveyors; and pardons. SCHOT. Cost: £2.00. Cheshire Court Rolls (1259-1290) Civil and criminal cases for most of Cheshire were handled by the county courts. Here we have the county court rolls for November 1259 to August 1260, December 1281 to September 1282, and December 1286 to September 1289. The city of Chester exercised its own jurisdiction, and here we have crown pleas and presentments from 1287 to 1297. The royal manor of Macclesfield in the east of the county had three independent jurisdictions - the hundred, forest and borough. Royal justices in eyre dealt with civil and criminal cases from the hundred and forest during their yearly visits, and here we have records from 1284 to 1290. Also covered by this index is an Inquest of Service in Time of War in Wales of 1288, listing knight's fees in the county. SCHOT. Cost: £4.00.	Sample scan, click to enlarge
Taxpayers of Swanborough hundred in Sussex (1296) This roll of a tax of an eleventh assessed on the inhabitants of the rape of Lewes in Sussex was delivered to the Treasury in May 1296: the roll, remaining among the Carlton Ride Manuscripts (E. B. 1781) was edited and annotated by W. H. Blauuw, and published by the Sussex Archaeological Society in 1849. The hundred of Swanborough comprised the parishes of Iford, Kingston, Westout, and Southover, near Lewes: but this short list of jurati or assessors does not indicate which places they each represented. Inhabitants of London (1275-1312) Letter Book B of the City of London contains enrolments of recognizances between inhabitants, particularly citizens, for sums of money lent or due; grants of pieces of land or property; and various records relating to the city administration. London, Essex and Hertfordshire clerks, clerics, monks and clergy (1361-1374) Ordinations to first tonsure, acolytes, subdeacons, deacons and priests, from the register of bishop Simon de Sudbury of London. London diocese covered Middlesex, Essex and part of Hertfordshire; the ordinations also attracted many persons from distant dioceses bearing letters dimissory from their ordinaries, and these are duly noted in the text. Many of these clerks would not go on to obtain benefices and remain celibate. The lists of subdeacons, deacons and priests state the clerks' respective titles, i. e., give the names of the person or religious house undertaking to support them. Monks and friars ('religious') are listed separately, and the lists of subdeacons, deacons and priests are also separated into beneficed and not beneficed (or 'not promoted'). Suffolk Poll Tax Returns: Barrow (1381) Edgar Powell transcribed and edited the poll tax returns for Thingo and Lackford hundreds (Public Record Office Lay Subsidy Suffolk 180/34, 38, 43, 49 and 52) for his study of the peasants' rising of 1381. Full lists of adults are given, township by township, under the heads armiger (esquire, rated at 6s), agricole (farmers, 3s a head), artifices (craftsmen, at 2s, often with their trade specified), laboratores (labourers, 12d), and servientes (servants, 4d to 12d a head, sometimes with their master's name given). There are returns for Barrow, Brockley-cum-Rede, Chevington, Flempton, Fornham All Saints, Hargrave, Hawsted, Hengrave, Horningsheath Magna, Horningsheath Parva, Ickworth, Lackford, Mildenhall, Nowton, Risby, Saxham Magna, Saxham Parva, Westley, and Whepsted.
