Wiltshire Deserters (1775)
Once initial searches for deserters in England from the Army, Navy or Marines proved fruitless, rewards were offered in the London press. These normally state the deserter's full name, age, birthplace, height, trade, appearance and any distinguishing features.

Subscribers to the Racing Calendar: Somersetshire (1777)
The extensive subscription list for 1777 to the annual Racing Calendar first gives the names of the nobility, then the other subscribers county by county for England, with separate sections for Wales, Ireland and Scotland. Initials or christian names are stated only occasionally.

Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's name, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. 2 January to 31 December 1782. The provincial sections of the Universal British Directory include lists of gentry and traders from each town and the surrounding countryside, with names of local surgeons, lawyers, postmasters, carriers, &c. (the sample scan here is from the section for Bath). The directory started publication in 1791, but was not completed for some years, and the provincial lists, sent in by local agents, can date back as early as 1790 and as late as 1797.

The War Office issued regular notices of promotions and appointments within the British Army, and these were published in the Edinburgh Gazette. Full names of these officers are given, as well as the surnames of those whose places they filled because of promotion, resignation, death, dismissal or exchange. January to December 1820.
