Worcestershire landowners

An inquiry was held at Worcester 30 September 1428 into the ownership of the knight's fees from each hundred in the county (but not the city) of Worcester. The jurors based their findings on a previous inquiry a few years earlier, so that for each fee or portion of a fee the name of the previous freeholder is also given. This inquiry was used as the basis for the raising of a subsidy from the laity, taxed at 6s 8d per owner of an entire knight's fee, 1s 8d for a quarter of a knight's fee, smaller fractions being exempt; in addition, the population of each parish was taxed by a formula based on earlier taxations dating back to 1290; but the taxation of the parishes was levied by the parishes themselves, so there is no return of individual householders. The names that appear in these records (the inquiry and the subsequent lay subsidy roll) are thus those of the major freeholders, the jurors, assessors and collectors. Pleas at Westminster Michaelmas term, 5 & 6 Philip & Mary and 1 Elizabeth, 1558. The court dealt with civil cases: debt, detinue, slander, assault, theft, breach of covenant, formedon, novel disseisin, &c. Each case is marked in the margin with the name of the county to the sheriff of which the writs were issued. Most often, but not necessarily, this would be the county of residence of the defendant. This calendar of the original formulaic record in abbreviated Latin on parchment has been made by David Bethell, preserving all individual detail from each case. Wiltshire freeholders
(1625-1645)
Inquisitions post mortem were held after the death of freeholders who held their estates in capite or in chief, i. e., directly from the crown. The inquisition, held by the royal escheator upon the oath of jurors from the county who were also normally freeholders, recorded what estates the deceased had held, by what tenure, what they were worth, the date of death, who was the next heir, and whether the heir was of age.
