Papist Returns, lists of Roman Catholics sent in from the parishes of Yorkshire remained in the archives of the Archbishop of York at Bishopthorpe. Those for the city of York (and part of the Ainsty, Hutton Wensley, Fulford and Acaster Malbis), Leeds, and for Aberford, Bilsdale, Coulton, East Ness, Everingham, Gilling, Hawnby, Hemsley, Holme, Hovingham, Hutton Bushell, Kirkby Moorside, Kirkdale, Malton and Scackleton were printed in the third volume of The Northern Genealogist. Some of the lists merely give heads of households with occupations; others have the whole family group with servants; the return for Everingham sets out the return in columns, listing the whole familes, occupations, ages, and length of residence in the parish.MAINMAN. | Tradesmen of York
(1559-1759)
No man or woman could trade in the city of York without having obtained 'freedom' of the city. Their names were recorded on the 'Freemen's Roll', or Register of the Freemen of the City of York, which contains about 16,600 names for this period. A list of names was prepared for each year. Each annual list starts with the name of the mayor and the camerarii or chamberlains. The chamberlains were freemen charged with the duty of receiving the fees of the new freemen; of seeing that only freemen traded in the city; and of preparing this roll, which was compiled from the names on their own account books from the receipts for the fees. There are three groups of freemen: those who obtained freedom after serving out an apprenticeship to a freeman; the children of freemen (per patres); and a handful who claimed freedom by 'redemption', i. e. by purchase or gift from the Mayor and Court of Aldermen.

The provincial sections of the Universal British Directory include lists of gentry and traders from each town and the surrounding countryside, with names of local surgeons, lawyers, postmasters, carriers, &c. (the sample scan here is from the section for Nottingham). The directory started publication in 1791, but was not completed for some years, and the provincial lists, sent in by local agents, can date back as early as 1790 and as late as 1797.

| Electors in Hull
(1835)
A poll was taken 6 and 7 January 1835 for the election of members to serve in Parliament for the borough of Kingston-upon-Hull, the candidates being Matthew Davenport Hill, William Hutt and David Carruthers. This poll book lists all the electors in the wards of Hull (St Mary's, North, Trinity, Whitefriar, Humber, Austin, and South Myton), in Sculcoates, and in Sutton, Southcoates, Drypool &c. In each ward the names are arranged in five sections: Householders and Burgesses occupying Ten Pound Households; Burgesses not occupying Ten Pound Households; Unpolled Voters residing in the ward; Unpolled Freemen; and Non-Resident Freemen not polling. There are also short lists of votes that were tendered but the validity of which remained uncertain. In all cases full names and addresses are given: where electors voted, their votes are indicated in the right-hand columns, the numbers shown there being their numbers in the cumulating totals for each candidate. This 'List of all persons who have obtained certificates of qualification for appointments in the various public departments' from 21 May 1855 to 31 December 1856 was issued by the Civil Service Commission. It gives full name, surname first; department; situation; and date of certificate. The names of those candidates who obtained honorary additions to their certificates are preceded by an asterisk; the names of the candidates who obtained appointments as the result of competition are preceded by a dagger.MAINMAN. The Civil Service Commission published this annual list of all persons who had obtained certificates of qualification for appointment in the various public departments. The list gives full name (surname first); department (such as Post Office, or Inland Revenue); situation (such as Letter-carrier, or Clerk); and date of certificate. Candidates whose names are preceded by a dagger obtained appointments as the result of competition. Those whose names are preceded by an asterisk obtained honorary additions to their certificates either for proficiency in extra subjects chosen by themselves, or for marked proficiency in the prescribed subjects.
