Bury St Edmunds area testators and legatees

A number of wills proved and registered in the courts of Bury St Edmunds Commisary and Sudbury Archdeaconry were selected by Samuel Tymms 'more with a view to illustrate the peculiar customs and language of the period than the topology or genealogy of the district' and transcribed for publication by the Camden Society in 1850. The Founders of New Plymouth
(1620-1651)
(New) Plymouth colony was settled 120 Puritan families from England who landed there in 1620. New Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay were united in 1692 as Massachusetts. The manuscript volume in which the earliest records of the colony are entered is entitled "Plymouth Colony Records, Deeds, &c., Vol. I, 1627-1661" and "Book of Indian Records for their Lands". This book was edited by David Pulsifer and published in 1861 by order of the legislature of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The principal contents are records of the establishment of the colony, the initial land grants, distribution of the few cattle brought across the Atlantic, and the subsequent deeds by which land transfers took place, and servants were indentured. | Sample scan, click to enlarge

Purchasers of Bishops' Lands: Norfolk
(1647-1651)
16 November 1646 Parliament ordained the sale of all the lands and estates of the bishops and archbishops for the service of the Commonwealth. This account, printed in 1834, is a transcript from a manuscript presented to the British Museum by William Bray (Add. 9049). It gives in tabular form the details of the conveyances of the lands to private individuals, showing the name of the bishopric; the date of the conveyance; county; description of the lands; purchaser; and purchase money. A total of over £624,158 was raised: after the restoration of the monarchy these estates were returned to the Church, with compensation. | Sample scan, click to enlarge

Suspected royalists and other dissidents in Kent
(1656)
Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland, divided the country into military districts under Major-Generals and their deputies, among whose duties was to forward lists of suspected persons to a central office in London. The register of suspected persons for Kent survives as Additional Manuscripts 34013 (A) in the British Library. Whenever a suspect travelled to London, he had to certify to the central office the place of his lodging, this information being recorded in another register (34014: B). A. Rhodes compiled a list of these suspects and their movements from these two books, and from correspondence in a third book (19516: C), and this list was published in Archaeologia Cantiana in 1898. The suspects are listed by parish, the name of the parish being given in capital letters. | Sample scan, click to enlarge
